Big Bad Bears

CORVAI.LIS (AP) California,
a two-touchdown underdog, came
up with a swarming defense Sat
urday to upset Oregon State Col
lege 14-6.
The visiting Bears, who scored
(heir first victory of the season,
had only one defensive lapse: A
momentary relaxation when soph-1
omore halfback terry Baker
seemed stopped on an end run i
early in the game.
Baker, continuing his string of j
sensational performances, did not I
miss his opportunity. Although
seemingly sioppea in nis own ,

from the hands of one tackier,
hurdled another and before the
other California defenders knew
what was happening, was off down
the sidelines on an 83-yard touch
down run.
The rest was almost all Cal.
The visitors' defense was so
tough that when Oregon Stale re
covered a California fumble on the
California 23, the home team could
push only 6 yards from there.
That was early in the game and
except for Baker's run, State got
into California territory only three
other times.
Meanwhile California drove . to
the Slate 17, to the State 1, and
then in the second half marched
49 yards to one touchdown and 47
yards to another. Halfback Steve
Bates scored the first on a 12-yard
end sweep and quarterback Randy
Gold got the other on a 1-yard
plunge.
Baker amassed 252 yards 145
from rushing, 107 from passing
to run his seven-game total to
1.265 yards, a new high for a
State athlete. The previous record
in one season was 1,083, by half
back Joe Francis.

Over Oregon Webfools
SEATTLE (AP) Somebody
some day may rewrite the script
for the Oregon-Washington foot
ball game. Saturday in Seattle
55,700 people saw a re run of the
1959 game and acted all the way
as if they didn't know it would
end again in a one-point Washing
ton victory. The score: 7-6.
There were a few minor differ
ences between this game and the
1959 cliff-hanger which ended 13
12, but it was the similarities
which were important.
Last year it was quarterback
Bob Schloredt who killed the Ore
gon hopes with a last minute pass
interception. This time it was
quarterback Bob Hivner and he
killed them three times.
Oregon's Webfoots, buried deep
in their own territory through a
scoreless first half, fashioned a
65-yard touchdown march in the
third period to take a 60 lead.
Quarterback Dave Grosz carried
the ball four times, pitched an 18
yard pass to Len Burnett and a
17-yarder to Cleveland Jones and
then sent Bruce Snyder around
left end for the final five yards.
The converson kick by Jones
was blocked by Washington's Ray
Mansfield, and that was the start
of the downfall of the gritty Web
foots. It wasn't apparent immediately.
Oregon balked a Washington
threat by holding for downs on its
Myrtle Creek finished a close sec
ond picking lip 1038 points for the
afternoon's action.
In the third position for B stock
drivers was Joe Roth, Albany,
with 605 points.
Only two trophies were present
ed in B super action with Martin
winning top place with 950 points
and Monty Wells, Roseburg, finish
ing second with 685 points.
Roy MoNeil of Canyonville to
taled 950 points to lake home the

Boys division, McNeil was follow
ed by Ronny Cart, Myrtle Creek
with 910 points. The third place
trophy for the Junior Boys was
won by Bruce Briggs Jr., Myrtle
Creek, who had an 863 point total.

Wolves Take Early Laad '
The Wolves jumped off to an
early 7-0 lead only to see the Butte
Falls squad come back to make
the score read 7-6 at the end of the
first quarter. After fighting to a
standoff through the second period
Days Creek picked up six points in
the third stanza and Butte Falls
added a seven pointer for a 13-13
Ue.
Butte Falls came up with the
own 13. Then Grosz launched the
Webfoots on another drive, only
to lose the ball on downs at the
Washington 23.
They were rolling again a few
moments later, primed by a 45
yard Grosz-to-Burnett pass. Then
Hivner, who had intercepted one
pass in the first half, picked off
another Grosz aerial on the Wash
ington five.
And then Hivner took the Hus
kies all the way, 95 yards in 12
plays, and the payoff play was one
to remember. The situation was
fourth and six with just 2:24 min
utes left and the ball on the Oregon
47.
Hivner passed to Don McKeta
on the sideline. Expecting McKeta
to step out of. bounds, Oregon de
fender Dave Grayson hesitated,
and McKeta whipped around him
into the clear. George Fleming
kicked the conversion and that
proved to be the victory point.
Oregon had a couple of minutes
left" and was not quitting. Grosz
hit Burnett with a 20-yard pass
and Grayson with a 17-yardcr.
Then he threw one from the Wash
ington 36 and the guy who got it
was Hivner again on the three
with 58 seconds left. Washington
ran out the clock.
Persistence paid off for Wash
ington, which had several players
on the sidelines due to a mid-week
attack of food poisoning. Most of
marred the action as the Birken
feld family of Myrtle Creek ran
into trouble.

Gina Birkenfeld was the first
