In four different polls the Indians and the Axemen noid down amereni posi tions with the Eugene 11 leading Roseburg on two lists and the In dians nosing out the Axemen on the other two polls. South Eu gene climbed up to third place and then lost to Marshfield and the In dians moved into third place in the state only to lose to North Bend the next weeKend. Tonight's action looms as a bat tle of quarterbacks with Mike Brundage handling the signal call ins for Roseburg and Bo Blair quortcrbacking the Axemen. Blair is sm in acunnft in me niiuinai ern.Leae.ue with 16 points and Brun dage follows closely with IS points to hold down fifth place in league scoring. Mnhhi Handlot PuntllM Punter Tom Hobbs will not be in the lineup on defense for ine In diana tonight but will still handle the punting. Hobbs has punted 20 times for an average of 35.2 yards-per-punt and his toe has helped the Indians for the past two weeks as he booted one 60 yards against North Salem and sent the pigskin 53 vards against Marshfield, but injured his foot and will not see any defensive action. Roscbure's rushing attack is led by workhorse fullback Mike Flury who has carried the ball 94 times. He has gained 494 yards for an av erage of 5.Z5 yaras-pcr-carry. In the starting Dacwieid ior me Indians will be quarterback Brun dage, fullback Flury and halfbacks Scott Crenshaw arid Tom Thur ber. Thurber and Crenshaw move the ball well on line plunges and will be charging naro. againsi uic Axemen. Marlin Burgess is expected to see action in the backfield for tho In dians as he is one of Brundage's favorite passing targets. Bruce Long will also be in the lineup for mo Indians oeiure ine jiuhi gun. Roseburg's forward wall will be comnosed of ends Palm and Blix: tackles Bruce Babbitt and Pete Rut- tcr; guards Ken King and Jim Mun ion: and center Kldon Davis. Rut- tcr will stay in the lineup on de fense to replace Hobbs while Bob Roark will come in to replace mix t tho end nosition with Palm hold ing down the other side of the line on defense. King, Moody At Guards Cnmnletins the defensive line will be King and Steve Moody at the guard slots, with Glen God dard and Butch Elliott at the tac kle positions. Goddard and Elliott represent the meat of the Roseburg lino tinning tho scales at 220 and 203 respectively. Rutter and Flury will be the line backers on defense, and Burgess and Thurber hold down the half back slots. Playing deep as the sal ty man will be Paul Brothers. Blair will be the engineer of the Axemen's attack and last week against North Bend he proved he could be effective on the ground and In the air. The 204 pound quarterback crashed into the end zone ior iwo lames ana kichcu iwu PAINTING LIMITED TIME ONLY PATs to lead the South Eugene 11 to victory. Halfback Dave Fluke adds to the driving punch for the Axemen and he was responsible for the third TD against North Bend last week. Jim Brooke adds reserve strength to the Eugene backfield as the speedy back is dangerous on end runs. End Jim Mooney is one of Blair's favorite targets through the air as Ihe classy pass snagger is noted for his near impossible catches. Rounding out the line the Axemen have only a slight weight advant age over the Indians with their center weighing in at 202 pounds. Both teams are up for tonight's battle as they both know a victory is a must. The Indians are also trying to get revenge for the loss suffered last year at the hands of the Axemen. Camas Valley Club Battles Lakers In Playoff The Camas Valley Hornets will attempt to get revenge on the Tri. angle Lake squad Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when the two teams clash in the eight-man sub-district championship play-off at Riddle. Camas Valley won the Southern Oregon title going undefeated against the teams in its league while Triangle Lake was walking over the eight-man squads in Lane County. The Lakers won a non- league contest from the Hornets 81-28 to prevent the Hornets from taking an unblemished record into the play-off. Real Duel Promised Saturday s meeting between the two clubs promises to be a real duel with the Hornets sporting an aerial attack hard to match and the Lakers boasting a rough ground attack. Triangle Lake is one of the top scoring teams in the slate in any class ball averag ing over 60 points per game. While ine iiorncis cannot maicn the Lakers point average, the Cam- Valley squad was among tne top defensive teams in the state before its meeting with the Lakers. Although the Hornets are not big, they are determined and the for ward wall has been rushing well holding Ihe opponents to very few points and limited gains on t h e ground. Before tangling with the Lakers the Hornets had given up only 462 vards in four games and had al lowed 34 points to be scored. The Lakers racked up a total of 596 yards and 81 points to do more damage than the first four oppon ents Camas Valley had faced. Out For Revenge The Hornets will be out to get revenge on the Lakers at Riddle and in getting revenge would also like to move on in the state eight man play-offs. Coach Bill Levins frels that Ms boys are capable of downing the Lakers if they fight hard. The boys were set back by the loss suffer ed by the Hornets when they trav elled into Lane County and will be NOTE ir-ir NEW DATE! HIGHLIGHTS PLANING MILL! Buel has shown that he knows what to do when he gets hold of the pigskin and in addition to his hard run ning is the leading passer for the Hornets. Buel has also been used as a receiver when one of the oth er backs decide to pass. Klser At End Kiser will be at an end slot Instead of in his regular halfback position due to the loss of the start ing ends for the battle with the Lakers. The versatile Kiser has proven he is effective any place on the team as he has been used as a runner, a passer and a pass receiver. In the pass receiving de- gartment Kiser shines as the com ination of Buel and Kiser Is one of tbe major reasons for the Hor nets going into the sub-district play-offs. All those who watched the recent Junior Varsity football, game know this. It was a close game with Glide winning 7 to 6 and with Glide mak ing a touchdown very late in the game. The game would have been won by a bigger score if the touch down earlier in the game had been counted. Glide had the ball and ran, making a touchdown but the whistle blew and the play was dead. When the Glide team asked the referee why the whistle was blown, the refereo answered, slightly em barrased, "I am sorry, boys, I accidently blew into the whistle while I was coughing." $391,000.00 EVALUATION BRIDAL VEIL. Volkman showed well against the Days Creek Wolves last week as he accounted for two touchdowns. His first tally came on a line plunge and the second lou na me speedy naitDacK grao bing a pass from Buel. Calling the signals for the Hor nets will be quarterback Earl Til- ton, 'lilton has handled the quar terback slot all season at Camas Valley and has a habit of knowing when to call the right play. Re serve strength in the backfield will como from Gary Baker and the ends Kiser and Jim McGinnis are both more than capable of hand ling the halfback positions. Favorite Targets McGinnis and Kiser will be the favorite targets for Bucl's aerials Saturday as they hold down the end slots. Both ends have seen action in the backfield for the most part this season, but both are ver satile and can be switched to the line without losing the threat they represent. In the center of the line will bej guards Bill Barcus and Sam Car- ler with Buck Dinham holding down the center srjot. I Triangle Lake Is led by the rush-1 ing of halfback Larry Krause and fullback Harold Groshomc. Krause accounted for four tallies against Camas Valley earlier this season while Groshome picked up three touchdowns. The Lakers are reported to have a big line that is backed up by a group of fast backs. Triangle Lake sticks fairly close to the ground depending on the running of its : fullback and halfback to pick up the yardage and the scores. i Camas Valley is up for the play-' off contest with the spirit among the team members running high. The boys would like to get even with the Lakers and know they must win to keep the hopes for a state crown alive. Anything could happen Saturday at Riddle, but one thing is certain both teams will be trying in the all-important battle. STARTING -9:30 A.M. Riddle is currently tied for the lead in UVL. action with the Suth erlin Bulldogs though Sutherlin is in the drivers seat going into the final game. In the UVL a point system is used whereby a team gets two points for a win, one point for a tie and no points for a loss. Both Have Six Points The Irish and the Bulldogs each have a total of six points as Riddle sports a 3-1 record and the Suth erlin 11 has a 2-0-2 record. How ever, if both teams win in the final round of action Sutherlin will represent the UVL in the play-off against the winner oi me nogue Valley League because the Bull dogs handed the Irish their only loss of the season, but the two teams would be co-champions in UVL action. Coach Jack Salo stated that des pite Oakland's winless record in league play the Oakers, are always tough. The Irish have several play ers on the injured list as do the Oakers, but both teams will be ready for a spirited contest Satur day. Hopes Remain High - Riddle still has hopes of ending the season as the lone holder of the UVL crown with Sutherlin meeting Douglas Friday night. Salo and his gridders feel that their ODening league game against Douglas has been the roughest outing they have been in all sea son as the Douglas defense hit hard and held the Irish to very little yardage gained.
