General Electric Co. intends to
keep its Hanford plant open even
if members of the Hanford Atomic
Metal Trades Council .should de
cide to strike.
The company made Us position
clear in a statement released
Wednesday.
"General Electric has a legal
right, and in fact an obligation, to
continue operations, and it fully
intends to avail itself of these
rights " the statement said.

hard cover. I don't know of any
performer who had so much ex

"So 1 decided to spend more
time with records, to make per
sonal appearances that I had been

The other part of the prophecy
has also come true: "I've been

Charge Hits Police

Two More In Oregon

The death of two persons in
Oregon traffic accidents Wednes
day raised the state's toll for Oc
tober to 22 and for the year to
348 in the Associated Press tabula
tion. A pickup truck plunged off the
road and into the Klamath River
near the California-Oregon Power
Co. dam, killing the driver, Mrs.
Inez Keffer, 46, Klamath Falls.
She apparently lost control of the
vehicle.
A logging truck hit and killed
Ernest C. Baker, 76, route 1,
Brownsville, Wednesday afternoon
in Brownsville. The truck driver.
James Arthur Waibel, also of
route l, Jjrownsviue, said that
Baker in avoiding another car
stepped back into the path of his
truck on the Halsey-Sweet Home

Methodist Bishop Asks
Catholic Assurances
WASHINGTON (AP)-A Metho
dist bishop says responsible offi
cials of the Roman Catholic
Church should join Sen. John F.
Kennedy in saying a Catholic
president would not be subjected
to church pressures.
Protestants are waiting for such
assurances from the Catholic
church itself, Bishop John Wesley
told a news conference.
He said Kennedy has made a
"completely satisfactory state
ment" of his own views on separ
ation of church and slate. But the
bishop added that some Catholic
papers and professors indicated
lhat Kennedy was "at variance
with his faith's official position."
The bishop recently was trans
ferred lo the Washington area
area from Boston. The news con
ference was called primarily as
a get-acquainted session, report
ers were told. The bishop volun
teered his views on religion and

Valsetz Police Chief
Lost On Hunt, Returns
SALEM (AP) Ben Scheele, 70,
Falls City police chief, who vanish
ed Wednesday morning while hunt
ing with his nephew in the rugged
terrain near Valsetz, walked into
Valsetz Wednesday afternoon.
His appearance ended a search
by Valsetz police and volunteers
from Valsetz and firemen from
Falls City.
Scheele and his nephew, Gary
Vorderslrasse, had been hunting
with their wi"es.
Scheele and Vorderslrasse , left
the group and went into fog-bound
woods at 11:30 a.m. Scheele did
not return to the group with his
nephew.
Scheele walked into Valsetz at
4:15 p.m.

Sets New Record
LONDON (AP) An unprece
dented rush for gold sent the
price of bullion to new records in
the London market today.
A .rise bf nearly $2.24 took the
price of gold to $36.66 per fine
ounce.
At the official fixing (his morn
ing the price was marked up to
$36.40. Then, in trading which
lranuc million dealers described
as "phenomenal," "fantastic"
and "terrific," the price moved
up to $36.66.
A scramble for gold was touched
off earlier this week by Swiss
bankers, who have been advising
their customers to change Amer
ican dollars into gold.

Money Doesn't Bother Students
Attending Moscow's University
MOSCOW (SP) Money is one
thing the Asians, Africans and Lat
in Americans attending Moscow's
new .Friendship University don't
have to worry about.
The students told foreign news
men touring the university Tues
day that the Soviet governmnt
pays their plane fares to and from
Moscow. They get ann ititial 3,000
rubles to buy a winter wardrobe
Room and tuition are free. And
they say they get a monthly al
lowance of 900 rubles the pay
of an average Soviet factory work
er lo cover food and incidentals.
The ruble is valued officially at
25 cents but 10 cents is considered
a more realistic rate.
Soviet Premier Khrushchev an
nounced during his tour of Indo
nesia last February that the uni
versity would be established for
students from the three underde
veloped continents. After consider
able fanfare, the institution opened
Oct. 1 with a student body of about
300, including 65 Soviet students
specializing in foreign languages.
Soviet officials say the enrollment
ultimately will total 500, from 65
countries.
Some of the foreign students said
their home governments tried to
stop them from attending.
"Eleven wanted to come from
my country," but only I made it,"
Joseph Sankona, 25, of Cameroon
reported. "Our government didn't
want us to go."
Sankona said that he escaped
from his West African homeland
by getting permission to fly to
Togo, and the Soviet consulate
there helped him fly to Moscow.
Several students said they had
come to Moscow instead of seeking
education in the West because of
