A panel discus sion was held on the subject of economic prosperity and how It at affecta social health. Francis Ril ey of the State Employment office acted aa chairman with Charles Dondero of the county housing of fice and Morris Bowker, county assessor as other panel members. The panel members pointed out that Douglas County is primarily dependent upon the timber. industry and that the housing picture af fects the economy more than any other industry. Trouble Snots Some of the things which have caused the slowdown in nation-wide house building and hence a declin inz economy in our timber pro ducting areas are high interest rales, snorter terra nome loans which slows down the selling of homes, wage attachments, ana in flated land costs, according to the panel. The panel members stated that Douglas county is on a tairiy atable economy at the present time and that it will become more stab ilized as the industry in the coun ty is more diversified. They stated that one thing that could help would be a stabilized tax rate so that industries would know just the amount of their taxes. In the discussion that followed, It was pointed out that the Rose burg Chamber of Commerce has done some advertising in out of slate papers for retired people to come to Douglas County because of our climate and other advan tages. This, it is believed, will Help stabilize our economy also, according to some speakers. The November meeting will be on how formal education affects the aocial health of the county. Canyonville Assault Charge To Grand Jury Bobby Ray McVey, 24, of North Carolina, has been bound over to the Grand Jury for Douglas Coun ty, according to a transcript from Justice court at Canyonville filed . by Justice of Peace Nina Pietiold, McVey is charged in a private complaint of Edwin R. Alexander with assault with a deadly weapon. He Is charged specifically with threatening to stab Alexander with a pocket lenife. Arrested Oct. 1, he was arraigned Oct. 5 and asked time to consult an attorney.
