Face Fashions Yankee Coffins PITTSBURGH (AP) Elroy Face is an off-season carpenter whose special project this week is fashioning a coffin for the niii'hly New York Yankees. . "I'm ready to go against them tomorrow and the next day, too, if I'm needed," the Pittsburgh re lief pitching ace said today. "They look like just any other club to me." Renowned as an Iron man who pitched in nine successive games and won 22 in a row over a two season period in 1938-59, the mild slightly built upstate New Yorker said he gets his pitching endur ance from swinging a hammer. "I come from a family of carp penters," he added. "My father was a carpenter. I studied car pentry. During the off-season, I refinish basements and do other building. Hammer Helps "Swinging that hammer, I fig ure, gives me more strength in my right arm." Apparently it puts some mettle in his heart, too. He has shown an utter lack of fear of the vaunt ed Yankee power in saving three games for the Pirates and sending his team into the sixth game Wednesday leading 3-2. Brashness and cold confidence characterize this 5-8, 160-pounder who seems to take a fiendish de light out of whizzing his fork ball past the bats of Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra and company. "I respect 'em all, but fear none," he said. "I figure every man who steps up there against me is capable of hitting the ball out of the park, but at the same time I'm con vinced I'm not going to let him do it." Face Slender Face is a slender, nut-brown man with close-cropped brown hair and flashing blue eyes. His hobbies are fishing, hunting and guitar-strumming with the Pir ates' hillbilly band. Fred Mat thews, told him he would be lucky to make it in Class D ball be cause of his age (21) and size. "I guess I fooled him," said Face. "Here I am in the World Series. Admits We Has His Worries PITTSBURGH (AP) Casey Stengel said it just right if you overlook the grammar. "Well, observed the New York manager Monday after Pitts burgh's 5-2 triumph, "We gotta win tne next one or we ain t gonna be playing ball no more." That's the way the World Series picture was today, the , Pirates needing just one more victory to eliminate the Yankees. After absorbing two terrific shellackings in a row, the battling Bucs bounded back with two vic tories in the enemy's own ball park to take a 3 to 2 lead in the best-of-seven set. Just two days ago, the odds makers were laying 5 to I on the Yankees to win the series. Today, they're giving odds of 4 to 1 on the Pirates. Bob Friend, Pittsburgh's 18 game winner, is Danny Murtaugh's pitching choice for the sixth game Wednesday. If a seventh game is needed, Murtaugh will call on Vern Law, the only pitcher with two victories in this series. Ford or Turley, which ever doesn't pitch Wednes day, will start the payoff game, provided the Yankees even the se ries. Stengel, who only a short time ago was aiming for four straight following Pittsburgh's opening game victory, admittedly had his worries today. Friend pitched last Thursday and was charged with the 16-3 de bacle in the second game. He gave up six hits in four innings before he was taken out for a pinch hit ter with Pittsburgh trailing 3-1. The strone-armed righthander. however, struck out six. Murtaugh said he would start the same lineup if Turley should be the pitcher. Against Ford, Mur taugh will use Hal Smith behind the plate in place of Smoky Bur gess. Another possible change may be Rob Skinner in left in place of Gino Cimoli, if Turley pitches. I Skinner, who has been out of ac-1 tion since the first game with a jammed left thumb said he was available for pinch hitting duties Monday. Harvey Haddix, with the help of Elroy Face, put the Pirates in a commanding position Monday be fore 62,753 Yankee Stadium fans. The 35-year-old left-hander had a three-hitter until the seventh when he weakened and gave up singles to Tony Kubek and Hector Lopez. Face, for the third time in the series, came on and stilled the Yankees the rest of the way. Art Ditmar, for the second time in the series, was shelled from the mound early. The tall right hander, who was kayocd in the first inning of the opener was knocked out in the second inning this time. . A double by Dick Groat and a single by Bob Clemente scored one in the third, off reliever Luis Arroyo. Pittsburgh's final run came in the ninth off Ryne Duren on Smoky Burgess' single, an er ror,' a wild .pitch and Don Hoak's single. - The Yankees scored in the sec ond on a double by Elston Howard and two infield outs.
