Newport To Start
New Armory Job
STAYTON, Ore. (AP)-The fed
eral government has allocated its
75 per cent share of the cost of a
new armory at Newport, Rep.

Walter Norblad, R-Ore., said to

This is the maximum federal

HOQUIAM (AP) Harry Byng,
a retired seaman, will celebrate
his 104th birthday at a rest home
here Sunday.
A quiet parly and reception was
held for him at t h e Resthaven
Nursing home. Byng is blind al
though otherwise in fair health.
Byng came to the Grays Har
bor area in 1890. He is the oldest
living member of the Loyal Order
of Moose.

River Puts Iowa ,
Town In Nebraska

CARTER LAKE, Iowa (AP)-
The meandering Missouri River
has placed this town of 2,281 in
a dilemma: legally it's part of
Iowa but geographically it is at
tached to Nebraska.
Residents want to settle the
question once and for all. They'll
have a chance to voice their pret
ferences at a hearing today of the
lowa Boundary Commission.
Carter Lake's 1.400 acres once
were on the Iowa side of the river.
But along about 1890 the river
flooded, cut a new channel and
when the waters had receded Car
ter Lake was on the wrong side
ot the river.
Nebraska has sought unsuccess
want to remain in lowa.
State Sen. Frank Hoxie of Shen
andoah, chairman of the lowa
Boundary Commission, says
majority of Carter Lake residents
want to remain in lowa.
Any change would have to be
approved by the legislatures of
both lowa and Nebraska and then
by an act of Congress.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Peterson
returned home Sunday after spend
ing the weekend in Lebanon vis
iting with Mr. and Mrs. George
Cannon.
Mist Becky Roberts, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Hex Roberts, has
enrolled as a freshman student at
University of Oregon. Her parents
took her to Eugene Wednesday.
Miss Maureen Hallmark, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Hall
mark, is among Roseburg girls
who left last week for Eugene to
enroll at University of Oregon.
Maureen will be a freshman.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Temple have
moved into the Harvey Blake prop
erty on Fair Street. The Blnkesi

Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Morgan and
two children, whose home was
destroyed recently, will be given
a shower Wednesday, Sept. 21,
at the home of L. E. Sullivan on I
Quail Lane in Riversdale. All
friends and neighbors are invited
to come between the hours of 10
a. m, rind 2 p. ill.
Mist Susan Byron, daughter-of
Mr. and Mrs. James Byron, has
left for Eugene to resume her
studies as a sophomore at Uni
versity of Oregon. Her parents
took her to Eugene and they stop
ped en route at Village Green to
be joined at dinner by Art Duggan
and Mrs. Norma Mackey, both of
Cottage Grove.
Mr. and Mrs. George Castillo
returned home Sunday after spend
ing the weekend at Salem and at
the coast. They left Friday for
Salem, slaying there overnight.
The following day, Castillo, assist
ant editor of The News-Review,
was a speaker at the Oregon News
paper Publishers Assn. meeting.
They spent Saturday night at Surf
Tides on the Northern Oregon
coast.

moved this week to Sunnyvale,
Calif., where Hie former will he
employed. Lynch was formerly
business agent of 1WA Local 3-436,

Mrs. Willard Buchanan is start
ing to work this week for Dr.
Robert Mooers. She will be working
Saturdays as receptionist.
Barney Wimer, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Everett Wimer. has left for
Eugene to resume his studies at
Northwest Christian College.
Mrs. Cora Moore of Roscoe. Mo.,
has left for her home alter spend
ing the summer here visiting her
daughter, Mrs. Arta Terrei, and
other relatives.
Marlyn Suksdorf, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Suksdorf, h-is en
tered the University of Oregon as
a freshman student. Her parents
took her to Eugene last week.
Marlyn will be staying at Hen
dricks Hall.

Winds Restaurant, was released
Sunday from Torest Glen Hospital
in Canyonville where he under
went an appendectomy.
Mr. and Mrt. Roy Heberd went
to Eugene Sunday to attend the
reception at University of Oregon
for new students and their parents.

entered the University as a fresh-

Mr. and Mrt. Paul Geddes went
to Eugene Saturday to see their
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Russ Caldwell, and to see the
Oregon-Idaho football game. That
same evening they traveled to Sa
lem to see the Willamette-College
of Puget Sound football game and
were the houseguests of Mr. and
Mrs. William Bush. They returned
home Sunday night after spending
the day in Portland visiting their
daughter, Carole.
Mist Gayle Harris, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Harrie, has
entered Lewis and Clark College
in Portland as a freshman student.
Gayle and her grandmother, Mrs.
Edith Braley of Medford, have
been in the east visiting relatives
and friends, and Gayle went di
rectly to school after her trip.
Mrs. Harris met Mrs. Braley and
Gayle in Portland. Mrs. Braley
stopped by in Roseburg at the
Harris home en route to her home
in Medford.
