Barge Interests
Ask Rate Block
WASHINGTON (AP) Pacific
Northwest barge line interests
asked the Interstate Commerce
Commission recently to block a
proposal by railroads in that area
to cut their rates on grains moving
from interior points to the Pacific
Coast.
The rail carriers have given no
tice they will make a reduction
of about 24 per cent effective
Sept. 30, provided the ICC does
not intervene with a suspension
order.
The railroads contend the cut is
necessary to meet truck and
barge line competition.
The protest was filed by Inland
Empire Waterways Association,
headquartered at Walla Walla,
Wash. Speaking for the barge
companies, the association de
scribed the proposed reduction as
"drastic" and said it would "jeop
ardize our current transportation
network."
The association said the proposal
required full investigation. The re
ductions have been posted by the
Milwaukee, the Great Northern,
the Northenn Pacific, the Union
Pacific, the Spokane, Portland &
Seattle Railways and their short
line connections.
The lower rates would apply to
grain moving from Northern Ida
ho, Washington, Oregon, and West
ern Montana to Seattle, Tacoma,
Vancouver and Longvicw, Wash.,
and Portland and Astoria, Ore.
