Stanley A. Boyd, hai been named
Oregon Doctor-Citizen ol the Year

today.
Dr. Boyd, married and the fa
ther of live children, wa chosen
bv the society's House of Dele
gates on the eve of the opening of
the four day convention.
A plaque will he presented Dr.
Bovd Thursday night at the so
ciety! annual banquet. He was
cited for serving "his profession
well as a community service am
bassador of good will."
One of the chief speakers for
the conventipn, Dr. Philip R. Alli
son of Oxford University in Eng
land, arrived Tuesday. He will
discuss his findings showing how
the human lung gets and handles
satisfactorily many more blood
clots which can follow mrgpry
than were previously known
about.
Attention to lun? cancer has
stimulated greater interest in lung
surgery, he said. He added that
there is no question in his mind
but that smoking is "a cause''
but not "the cause" of lung can
cer. Dr. Allison works part time in
England's National Health Serv
ice. He said it works well in Eng
land, but he hastened to add that
what works in one nation might
not do for another,
Dr, Allison praised the work
and enthusiam for clinical re
search in the United States. He
said his country was doing an ex
cellent job on research in basic
science, but doesn't spend as
much money on the clinical re

Heavy Cargo Shipments
Noted At Bonneville
PORTLAND (AP) A record
total of 2(10,145 tons of cargo were
moved through the Bonneville
Dam locks on the Columbia Riv
er by tugs and barge during
August, V. S. Army Engineers
said Tuesday.
Wheat accounted for 117,164
tons of this, which was a new one
month high for wheat shipments
on the river.
The record total cargo for Aug
ust, 260.145 tons, compared with
229.923 tons in the same month of
1959.

gon State Employment Service
appealed for pickers for bean and
blackberry crops in the Portland
metropolitan district.
Some 40 per cent of the crop
remained unpicked, the Service
said, with 75 per cent of the har
vest workers now back in school.
Pickers were urged to go to the
stale employment office at South
west 3rd Avenue and Ankeny
Street.
Similar harvest problems face
Willamette Valley growers, a
service spokesman said, but
growers were trying to get the
opening of school delayed. There
was no indication, the spokesman
added, how many schools might
go along with the Idea.
A-Bomb Creator Won't
Pay Hiroshima Visit

heimer, one of the creators of the
atom bomb, does not plan to visit
Hiroshima, where the first A
bomb was dropped, during his
visit to Japan.
"I would like to," the noted
U.S. physicist said, "but it is not
clear that it will be practical."
Oppenheimer is here as guest of
the Japan Committee for Intel
lectual Exchange. During his
three-week stay he will lecture in
Tokyo and Osaka on achievements
in science.
Oppenheimer expressed doubt
in an Interview that Communist
China is about to perfect an atom

Greet Kennedy
SPOKANE (AP) - Gov. Albert
D. Rosellini of Washington and
Rep. Edith Green (D-Ore) were
among dignitaries on hand to
greet Sen. John F. Kennedy when
the Democratic presidential nom
inee arrived in Spokane Wednes
day. Both were expe led to accom
pany Kennedy to Seattle in the
afternoon.
Kennedy, Rosellini and Sen. Hen
ry M. Jackson (D-Wash), the na
tional Democratic party chairman,
rode together in a caravan of some
50 cars that carried the party from
the airport to downtown Spokane.
