Sugar Beet Sales
Hit Ail-Time High
WASHINGTON (AP) Suspen
sion of U.S. sugar purchases from
Cuba apparently has been a boon
lo the domestic beet sugar indus
try. The Beet Sugar Assn. reported
Monday its sales for the first
seven months of I960 hit an all
time high of 22,800.000 bags of
100 pounds each. This was 842,
000 bags more than the previous
record for the period, set in 1958.
Beet sales in July, said Presi
dent Robert II. Shields of the as
sociation, were the highest for
that month in 10 years 5,400,000
bags.
The marketing quota for beet
sugar in this country is also the
largest on record. It was in
creased last month to 2,514,945
tons.
This year's harvest, already be
gun in California, will start in
the 21 other producing atates in
September, Shields said, adding:
"Record production this year
appears likely."
