In California, Mosk said the child and the mother were Cali fornians and the question of neg lect is up to state authorities there. So Bond invited Ford to direct a "Wagon Train" episode for NBC-TV. 'I figured I could handle the ornery old so-and-so in my own backyard," says Bond, ''but it's no use. He brought along a new TV actor with him a Michael Morrison gave him one line and he steals the whole show from me." Bond says the Ford episode will be shown about the fifth or sixth show of the fall season. "All I can say is that he w as good on TV as he is in the mov ies." Bond. John Wayne and all others in the Ford slock company always speak of their discoverer with profanity tinged with endear ment. Bond has been a particular tar get of Ford's through the years. When "Wagon Tram" first went on the arr. Ford organized a brigade of friends to call Bond every Wednesday evening be tween 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. "Ile knew 1 was home watching 'Wagon Train' ", says Ward, "it took me a couple of programs to get wise. Now, I just take the phone off the hook." Recently, I mentioned to Ford that 1 had just talked "with your friend. Ward Bond." "Ward Bond has no friends," snapped Ford. Bond says Ford claimed he never had seen him on "Wagon Train." "I wouldn't watch that phony Western of yours," he quoted Ford. "Then he'd proceed to tell me exactly what was wrong with each episode. "Finally. 1 told him: Mf you are so good, why don't you come over and direct one yourself?" And that's how Bond got one of the highest-paid movie directors to make a "Wagon Tram" episode. (AP) One man was hurt but seven others escaped injury when a powder car exploded inside a coal mine near here early today. State Klines Director Crawford L. Wilson said all men were walk ing out of the mine. He said ap parently the one injured man was not hurt seriously. The explosion occurred three miles inside the mine. Wilson received the report di rectly from the Amherst Coal Co. mine by telephone. The powder car was of an en closed type. Wilson said that a fire resulted from the explosion, but that it was virtually extin guished. (AP) The smell of "rotten potatoes" filled this city for 90 minutes Friday as an unidentified gas caused vomiting, nausea and headaches and chased 500 families from their homes. Dr. Walter Qucbedeaux, Harris County antipollution director, said more than 40 persons became ill, some passed out, one was hos pitalized, but no one died. Quebcdeaux, who didn't get to La Porte in time to get air samples while the gas was in the air, said the symptoms of the victims indicate it was phosgene. Phosgene, a gas used during World War I, causes vomiting, nausea, headaches and chest con strictions, Quebedeaux said.
