10 Th Nwi-Rview, Roieburj, Signs PointTo Improved Business Conditions After Summer Season's Slump NEW YORK (AP) Businesi drifted in the summer doldrums Jast week. The sleel and automobile indus tries operated at a slow pace and the stoek market edged lower on light volume of trading and then came back almost to the starl ing point. . But there was a sign that th wind is stirring and that the economy's sails soon should be filling out: The first 1961 model automo biles began rolling off assembly lines. That means there will he big orders for steel and more freight business for the railroads. The 1961 model production was just a trickle: 1,0(10 Valiants. 100 Dodge Lancers and 225 Buick Specials. Auiomakers accelerated Ihe closing down of I960 model as sembly lines to make the change over. This reduced the week's out put to an estimated 102,000 cars from 107.024 last week and 108, 240 a year ago. Kales in July totaled 428.354 cars, down 15 per cent from July 1959. This was the f i r a t month this year that sales had fallen below the corresponding month of last year. Production in July was 434,377 cars, compared with 555,422 a year ago. But output for the first seven months amounted to 4.243. 871, about 10 per cent ahead of 1959. SImI Rallies Slightly The steel industry boosted out put slightly as orders started to dribble in. The week's operating rale was estimated at 55.1 per cent of capacity, compared with 53 3 the previous week. .Steelmakers have been putting pressure on users to place orders now to prevent shutdown ot some mills. The trade publication, Iron Age, said the bottom apparently has been reached, and a sharp upturn should develop after La bor Day. However, Iron Age add ed that indications are that the fall increase won't be as strong as expected earlier. (AP) Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from eight coun tries were camped here beside a mountain lake under a clear sky. This week they divide into patrols and head out into some of America's most primitive country. The 131 girls set up camp Thurs day on Todd Lake, 25 miles west ol here in the Cascade Mountains, under direction of Betty Jean Alley of Long Island, N.Y. Satur day night they sat at a campfire while forest rangers told of their work and William Parke, chief of recreation and planning lor the Forest Service, Washington, D.C., outlined hopes for the future. The encampment is the most primitive ever sponsored by the Girl Scouts. Two girls each from France, Finland, Mexico, Pakis tan, Union of South Africa, Swit zerland, Antigua and Bermuda and 102 from the United Slates, all 16 to 18 years of age, make up the group. The purpose is to test girls' resourcefulness under rugged liv ing conditions. The big test starts Tuesday when groups of eight girls, without adult leaders, head out separately for four or five days of camping in the Three Sislora Wilderness Area, a rough, forested mountain section closed to the public.
