Continued excellent weather conditions existed during the month, allowing expansion in all outdoor activities. The only sour note in the bright picture was that there were sever al short-duration woods closures due to hii-h humidity. In addition, the earlier firm plywood market appeared snaky again by month s end. according to the report of F. C. ltiley, manager of the Hoseburg employment office. Tlie cily of Hoseburg issued 41 permits in July for a lotal valua tion of $f4.87. The county permits totaled $543,429. Claims for unemployment insur ance benefits have decreased for the third consecutive month, drop ping below the June figure by ap proximately 50 per cent. New job applications stood at 25!), compared with 275 for June and 230 for July a year ago. There were 127 non-agricultural job re placements, compared with 160 in June and 2G3 in July of 1059. In itial claims for the respective pe riods amounted to 305. 634 and 238. The average weekly number who claimed a week of joblessness was 334, 620 and 107. The active file of lob applicants was 680, 608 and 585 Employment should remain good during the next two months. The demand for bean pickers remains high, with bean yards in the Win ston area in need of 100 pickers now. Econ-0-Wash Opens At Glendale Location The Econ-O-Wash Automatic Laundry opened in Glendale July 28, according to its owner, Law rence Alullarkey of Quines Creek. Located on Pacific Avenue, next to the California Oregon Power Co. office, the laundry will be open 24 hours per day and is all coin operated. It features top-loading Speed Queen agitator washers with stainles steel tubs, and gas-heated fluff dryers which will accomodate four washer-loads at one time. The building, which housed the old Glendale Laundry, has been completely redecorated in a way which accents the modern con venience of its equipment and set up. Jack Patterson On Leave To Assist At New Mine Jack Patterson, clothing depart ment manager for Montgomery Wards store in Hoseburg, has taken fl 90-day leave of absence to devote his time to the Bolivar MininK Co. Patterson is vice president of the Bolivar company, which is de veloping a copper deposit on Boli var Creek east of Powers. He is now at the mine location assisting with development work. Construction Starts Drop To Minimum New construction starts In Rose burg dropped to the lowest point in many months during July, with no new commercial building starts and only two new dwellings. How ever, several large constructions in the city are underway, having been started earlier in the year, so the year's total will show up very well. There were 41 building permits issued for the month in the sum of $04,087. These included two dwellings for $25,105, no new com mercial, and 39 others for re modeling and repairs, amounting to $38,982, reports Bruco Mllis, city inspector. The remodeling permits Included one for $13,000 for the Presby terian Church, which will also in clude repair of blast damage. The actual amount of the work plan ned will run much higher than the permit figure. Another permit was for $6,000 for construction of an eastward ex tension to Mark's Market to house a coffee shop and bakery. A $1,000 permit was issued to South Step hens Market for a small addition at the northeast corner for a meat cutting room. The dwelling permits were taken out by Bob Dishman for a home at W. Maple St. and W. Yale Ave. and by Ivan Edwards for a dwell ing on W. Susan St. Permit was issued to Orchard Auto Parts for demolishing the south end of the Pine Court Apart ments, which were heavily da maged by the blast of Aug. 7, 1959. By comparison June had 44 per mits for $387,503 including four dwellings for $57,030, one commer cial building (the U.S. National Bank branch's new building) and 37 others for $19,550.
