Mon., Aug. 1, 1960 Negroes and while penoni hurled rocks and .insults at ach other ai a swimming pool and po lice rounded up more members of a Negro gang said to be respon silile for a series of rapes and robberies in Lincoln Park on the North Side. About 25 members of the Egyp tian Cobras and Vice Lords gangs participated in the street clash which was marked by gunfire. liichard Parks, 16, died with a bullet in the chest. Sammy Mit chell, also 16, suffered a bullet wound in the shoulder. Both were members of the Vice Lords. Police seized one of the Egyp tian Cobras, Robert Lewis, IS, who was carrying a .22-caliber rifle. Lewis, police said, admitted the shootings which he said was in retaliation for Parks hurling a brick at him earlier in the day. i Two other members of the Co bras also were seized and held without charge. The other gang members fled when police arrived. In another move, police hauled about 15 members of the Vandal eers gang in for a showup. Five members of the Vandaleers have been indicted for rape, robbery and assault after they allegedly beat two white men with baseball bats and raped their pregnant wives Tuesday night in Lincoln Park. j At the showup, several victims 'of recent robberies and assaults in the Lincoln Park area identified several youths as their assailants, police said. Mrs. Robtrr Kf and Mrs. Don Reed returned to their homes dur ing the weekend from Seattle, where they had gone as chaper ones for the Knights of Pythias Drum and Bugle Corp., which par ticipated at the Sea Fair. Their daughters, Roberta Keefe and Jan et Reed, are members of the group. Mr. and Mrs. Ward Cummingi Sr. have returned to their home here following a three week va cation trip which took , them to Colorado Springs, Colo., to attend a family reunion. The former's two brothers, George, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Walter, of De corah, Iowa, were present. Mrs. Cumhiings' brother, Walter Bun ning, of Rock Island, III., was there to greet them. They stop ped at Albuquerque, N.M., the Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion canyons, Hoover Dam and Las Vegas. At Lompoc, Calif., they visited former local residents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Chilson, and in Mountain View they called on Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Slayer Seeks Order To Vacate Sentence YAKIMA (AP) A young Wa palo man convicted of slaying a Seattle businessman last year moved Friday to upset his sen tence of life imprisonment. A motion was filed for John Bernard Doyle, 23, in U. S. dis rict court to vacate sentence on the grounds he was not properly defended by his courtappoinled attorney. Asst. U. S. Atly. Ronald F. Whitaker said the government would answer denying the allega tions.. Doyle, an escapee from North ern State Hospital, was convicted last Oct. 3 of the second degree murder of, Vivian A. Meagher. Meagher was found shot to death in a remote area of the Yakima Indian Reservation June 22, 1959. Doyle's petition said he was denied counsel of his own choice, effective assistance of counsel, that he did not receive statutory safeguards, had an appeal frus trated and blocked by his attor ney and was not allowed to see an attorney until three days after his arrest. In an affidavit. Doyle said he had $2,800 credited to him at the Yakima Indian Agency and was financially able to hire his own attorney. RAIN FLUNKS DATE WAYNESBLRG, Pa, (AP) -Wha' hoppen? Mr. and Mrs. Harry Burr left Wednesday for their home in Homedale, Idaho, having been call ed by the illness of their daughter, Mrs. Kaye Call, of Metolius, Ore. They had been spending several weeks here vacationing and visit ing relatives. They plan to care for the three Call girls while their mother is recuperating. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Johnson (Darlene Kruse) and sons, Steve and Ricki, left Thursday for their home in Norwalk, Calif., following a visit here with various relatives. They spent a few days in Eugene with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Johnson and were ac companied home by Connie Robi son, who will visit relatives in Norwalk. Russ Nix American Lawyers For Powers MOSCOW (AP) Sources today said U2 pilot Francis Gary Pow ers will not be allowed American lawyers when he goes on trial for espionage. The trial opens Aug. 17 before judge advocate and two "asses sors." Informed sources said the tribunal will be of the "first in stance," meaning Powers prob ably can appeal any sentence to a higher court. Death is the maxi mum penalty for espionage. Civilians On Federal Payroll Show Increase WASHINGTON (AP)-The num ber of civilians on the federal pay roll climbed slightly during the fiscal year ended June 30, the Senate-House Committee on Re duction of Nonessential Federal Expenditures reported today. The fiscal year-end total was 2.382,679, an increase of 15,688. But the committee headed by Sen. Harry F.
