At $1,825 Week
BALTIMORE (AP) '8 Gene
Littler headed today for the in
surance city of Hartford, Conn,
with a putting policy of his own
that has brought him an average
of SI .825 a week for the past three
months.
The 30-vear-old golfer from
Singing Hills., Calif., classified
his putting in the final round of
Sunday's Eastern Open as his
best of the year. "I've changed
my stroke a little but it's not
enough to describe," he said af
ter winning the 11th annual event.
It let him down only once when
he had to putt three times on the
15th green for one of his two
bogey fives on his Ust tour of
the Pine Ridge, course. However,
it also brought him seven birdies
so he was five under par for the
67 windup.
Gary Player, the stellar South
African, scored the same to fin
ish runner-up by two strokes.
The $3,500 first prize sent Littler
into the Insurance Open starting
Thursday with $23,728 in golf win
nings in his last 13 tournaments
since May 1.
AI Besselink of Grossinger, N.Y.
finished third with a 276.
on the Olympic team. Otis Davis
of Oregon, No. 3 man in the 400
meter run, won the event easily
in :45.9 and ran a sparkling first
lap in the 1,600 meter relay.
Two other guest athletes com
peted. Jerry Stubblefield of Ore
gon got off a 159-Bli discus throw
for sixth place. Clayton Steinke of
South Salem High School ran 3,000
meters in an 8:49.1 to place fourth
in a five-man field, just back of
Olympic steeplechaser Deacon
Jones.
Jim Grelle, member of the 1,500
