Woods, Colorado soph omore, is 19 and this is his first year of quartermiling, whether measured metrically or in yards. Even lT-year-old Joe F'aust of Culver City, Calif., youngest mem ber of the team, is a veteran compared to Davis and Woods. Faust has been a serious student of high jumping for six years and is one of the few Humans ever to clear seven feet. Davis, now beyond college elig ibility, was introduced to the cin der sport as a high juniper. Ore gon track Loach Bill Bowerman noted that Davis was only an average basketball guard, but one with tremendous jumping ability. He talked the Army veteran in to a pair of spikes and Davis jumped 6 feet 2 inches in his first meet. That was in 1958. Short of sprinters for a dual meet, Bowerman entered Davis and the lean ex-basketball player ran away from the regulars. So in 1959 Bowerman, with a coach's intuition, switched Davis to the quarter mile. He ran his first one in :48.4 trom a stand up start. Woods had run the half mile a bit at Fifth Avenue High in Pitts burgh. Last spring at Colorado, he turned out for track "for a change of scenery from football. I thought it would help ma keep in shape.' He took on the strange quarter mile distance and had no dreams of visiting Rome until he clicked off a :45.7 400 meters in the Na tional Collegiate meet. At the Olympic trials he was clocked at :46.7. Davis was third in the same timing. Jack Yerman of Woodland, Calif., is the ace of the 400-meter crew and Earl Young of San Francisco ranks second. Woods and Davis, still trusting to raw power, are striving to improve their form, their starts and their sense of pace. "Doggonit," said Woods, "I can't break myself of looking back." In most of his competition during his rookie year that was the only way he could see the race. .70-tS BLACK RAYON, TUBI-TYPI Plua tax and f facappabta ttra 4.70-19 BLACK KYION, TUBE-TYPE Plua tax and racappabls lira Low Priced SUCK' WHITE .
