Goverment Bonds Post New
High For 1960;
Boost Noted In
NEW YORK (AP) -The stork
market declined every day J a a t
week while United States govern
ment bonds moved to new highs
for the year.
These were the outstanding de
velopments in business and fi
nance. R.uini uenerallv continued
reasonably good, but not good
enough to satisfy everyone. In
many major industries, such as
steel, operations were well below
capacity.
Personal income, as reported
by the Commerce Department,
rose to a record high in June.
Also at a record high that month
was the cost-of-living, largely be
cause of upturns io some food
, items.

reported in new cars, which
means you can find a good buy in
them now. This situation reflects
heavy inventories. J'rices of ma
jor home appliances declined for
the fifth straight month.
The drop in the stock market
was orderly, mainly representing
lmv whittling awav of values
rather than any wild burst of
hysterical selling. Nevertheless,
many blue chip stocks have suf
fered wide losses since last year's
peaks.

were unable to translate this into
record second quarter income.
In other words, severe competi
tive condilions are making it dif
ficult to carry good sales down to
good profits,
Ohviouslv. there is some finan
cial hedging on the possibility of
a significant slackening in DU.il
ness. This is reflected in the
growing popularity of government
bonds.
Some of the buying in bonds,
according to informed sources,
represents reinvestment or money
taken out of the stock market.
Actually, government bonds, a
very stable security, can be pur
chased through brokers with as
little cash payment as 10 per cent
of the purchase price a 10 per
cent margin, in other words.
(The margin on stocks is DO per
cent, and brokers have been nop
ing the Federal Ucscrve Board
would reduce it).
This upturn in bond prices
means money is easier there is
less demand for it from business
Banks, insurance companies and
other lenders seek places to put it,
and a government bond is an ob
vious olace.
Today, no government bond is
selling at a price to yield as much
as 4 per cent, homo are yielding
Jess than 3 per cent. A short time
ago many yielded i per cent.
Sugar Price Soars
Coffee prices were reduced in
the wholesale market, and you'll
get more benefit if you don't use
sugar. Reason: The wholesale
