(AP) A pretty young housewife was kid naped early Saturday from her S75.000 Nassau country home by two armed Negroes, who shot her husband, bound him with wire and left him to die. One of the abductors and the woman, apparently unharmed were captured later in Connecti cut. The husband, the left side of his face shattered by a bullet wound, was in serious condition at North Shore Hospital in Man hasset alter undergoing emer gency surgery. He could give only the barest details of the kidnaping before he was taken to an operating room. An unidentified salesman dis covered Ihe kidnaping-shooting when he called at the luxury type residence overlooking Little Neck Bay. He found the front door open, then heard moans. tnside, he found the husband, Leonard Rothkrug, 32, with a bul let wound in the left side of his face just below the nose. His an kles and hands were trussed with telephone cord. In mumbled, painful words. Rothkrug told of Ihe kidnaping of his red-haired wife, Nancy, 23. The salesman, whose name was withheld by authorities, called po lice. Itothknig was still conscious when taken to the hospital. He told of being awakened by Ihe burglars, confronting them and be ing shot. The men fled with his wife in the Rolhkrugs' four-door Buick. Sheets of Salem tried to resigo as director of Oregon Civil De fense, but Gov. Mark Hatfield Fri day talked him into slaying on. Sheets, 69, said he submitted letter of resignation to Hatfield early this week. But the gover nor relused to accept it. "I have deferred to the gover nor's wishes." Sheets said. He said he submitted the letter because he "felt that it was ap propriate at this time" because of his age. He said there was con flict involved. Sheets has headed the agency since August of 1953.
