By NIEL CELLERS News-Review Sports Writer lloscbure placed third in the Southern Oregon Invitational Swim mine; "Championships held at the Koseburg Municipal rooi over me weekend. Finishing in the top position was the favored North Bend squad. Eu gene finished second, and Medford took the fourth position. It waa a very close race between Roseburg and Medford for the third place team trophy, with Roseburg winning 205-202. The points were added several limes before the third place winner was announced The top Uirce finishers took ten first place trophies each. North Bend, Kugene and Roseburg each took home ten individual trophies, while the Medford team had nine North Bend finished the meet -with a total of 294 points. Eugene was second with 214. Final point standings for the 10 teams entered were: North Bend 294. Eufiene 214. Roseburg 205, Medford 202, Grants Pass 169, Bend :i5. Sweet Home 41, Springfield 27, Rcedsport 19 and Klamatb Falls .16. - I.inda. Rhonda and Bruce Hess collected eight of Mcdford'i nine first nlacc trnnhics. Linda had four individual trophies, while Bruce won three and Rhonda took one. Four Events Won Linda, swimming in the 15 18 age group, won the lOOynrd lroesiyie, the 100-yard DacKsiroKe, me iuu vard breastroke and the 160-yord individual mcdlev. The individual medley consists of each swimmer using four oiucrcni sironcs 101 iv yard each. Bruce won the 60-yard butterfly, the 100-yard freestyle and tho 160 yard individual medley in ine i.t 14 age group. Rhonda won the 11 12 year old's 40-yard backstroke race. Diane Yates was the top winner for Roseburg. Miss Yates won three individual trophies. Swim ming in the 13-14 competition, she walked off with honors in tho 80 yard backstroke, tho 100-yard back stroke and the 100-yard freestyle. Rohhy Williams won the 40-yard butterfly and the 80-yard freestyle to cop two trophies for the Rose burg team. Williams swims in the 1112 age group. He placed second in the 40-vard freestyle behind teammate jerry Winters. Bill Zimmerman of Roseburg won the 13-14 age group competition in the 100-yard freestyle race. Ron I'i anrd collected a first place trophy for Roseburg in the 16-and-undcr hoys' diving competition. Dana Rhoden Wins Dana Hhodcn tuok the ninth In dividual trophy for Roseburg. Miss Ithoden won the 1112 age group in the 40-yard breastroke. The tenth Roseburg first place was in Uic girls' 160 yard freestyle relay. Stephens 6 The News-Review, Roseburg, Beavers Split With Seattle PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Portland's winning streak came to an end Sunday, but while it lasted it was the best of the season for the last place Beavers. The Beavers nicked Seattle 42 in the first game of a double header at Multnomah Stadium Sunday, making it live in a row. But the Rainiers came back and took the nightcap, 6 3. As they headed north to open a four-game scries at Tacoma to night, the Beavers were in last place by a half game, and 151-i games out of first place. The biggest bright spot in their Sunday victory for the Beavers White Sox Meet Eugene Tonight The White Sox will he out to get revenge tonight as the team trav els to Eugene to play a single game with the Ducks at 7:30 p.m. at Bethel Park. This will be the fourth meeting between the two team. Eugene has won two while Roseburg has won only one of the three previ ous games. Denny Peterson, ex Legion star from The Dalles, pitch ed both Eugene victories over the White Sox. Roseburg will take a season rec ord of 15 wins and eight defeats lo Eugene tonight. The White Sox ; won ten games before suffering a setback, 'fhe Roseburg semi-pro club has lost five of its last seven starts. Roseburg Is currently tied with Ashland for the league lead in Rogue Valley action. Both teams have league records of 11 wins and one loss. Portland's big hit in the vic tory was a homo run by Don Taussig, his 11th of the year. In other PCI, games, Willie Me Covey, late of the San Francisco Gianl.s, helped Tacoma to a double viciory. Two overtime wins over Sacra mento, 2-1 in 13 innings and 3-2 in the 11-inning nightcap, made a sweep of the four-game series. Last Tuesday Tacoma was eight games back of league-leading Spo kane in fourth place. Monday it was four games back in second place. McCovey, sent down to Tacoma by the San Francisco Giants last Monday, won Sunday's opener with a home run in the 13th. In other games. San Diego shut out Salt Lake twice 1-0 and 2-0; and Spokane trounced Vancouver 15-0. Spokane included three home run-; in its 18 hit blast which rout ed Vancouver at Spokane. CHICAGO (AP) Barry Mac Kay, at the peak of his game after impressively winning the National Clay Courts Tennis Title, today headed the U.S. Davis Cup team toward Mexico City. The four-man squad of Mac Kay, Bernard (Tut) Bamcn, Chuck McKinely and Earl Buch holz, are to arrive in the .Mexican capital tonight. They will have nearly two weeks to get acclimated lo the high altitude before opening the second round of American Zone Davis Cup competition, which, as in Canada, will be played on clay courts. The two league wins give Rose burg a league record of 11 wins with only one loss. Ashland's Lith uanians also have a league record of 11-1. Ashland and Roseburg split a doubleheader in the first round of league play and will meet again August 7. In the first game. Saturday night at Legion Field, Mike Coen had complete control from the first in ning. Coen gave up two singles in winning his fifth league game of the season. Coen was never in any serious trouble as he struck out 11 batters while walking only two. Grants Pass got one single off Coen in Ihe fifth frame and the final one in the sixth. The only inning Grants Pass real ly threatened was the seventh. With one man out Coen walked two batters. The lead runner Kermit McLcmore, was thrown uut at tempting to steal third and John Hammond struck out to cud the inning. Not one of the three Grants Pass runners left on base in the seven inning game got further than sec ond base. Frank Sprinkle reached second in the sixth frame on a Roseburg error and Darrell Woot en's single. Coen. retired the next two men to end the threat. Six Runs Scored Roseburg started the scoring oig with six runs in the first inning. With one man out Jim Dietz sin gled to right field. Ray Munyon then sent a long fly lo left-center field which went for an inside the park home run. Jerry Droscher followed wilh the second Roseburg home run. Dro scher's drive cleared the lelt field fence at about the 335 foot mark. Ron Beamer and Bill Oerding work ed Wooten for free passes and Al Lindbloom drove in the fourth run of the inning when he reached first on a Grants Pass error. Don Wells sent Oerfing home when the right fielder dropped his fly. Coen singled and Wells caught up with Lindbloom at third base. Lindbloom was forced into a run down between home and third and was finally tagged out. Wells scor ed on the fourth error of the in ning before John Livingston went out for the second time to retire the side. The While Sox added three more runs in the third inning as Lind bloom tripled off the left field fence with Wells and Coen following with singles. Livingston reached base on a fielders choice and Dietz collect ed his third single of the game. Dietz continued around to third on an error on the third baseman and tried to score even though the ball was in the infield. The third baseman tossed lo the catcher and was out trying to stretch a single into a home run. Beamer Triples A triple by Beamer and singles j uy i.io-.iuiooio aim ens coiuuiiieu with a walk and two errors pro duced three more runs for the White Sox in Ihe fourth inning. Three seemed to be the magic number for the White Sox as they came up with the final three runs of tho game in the sixth. Singles by Livingston. Munyon and Dro scher provided Roseburg with the hits of the inning. These hits were combined with two errors to pro duce the runs. - Dietz led the White Sox al the plate with three hits in four ap pearances. The two teams moved to Grants Pass Sunday to play t ie second game. Roseburg found things a lit tle rougher but still managed to come through with an 8-5 victory over Grants Pass. Grants Pass started off the scor ing with three runs in the second inning. These runs came on a to tal of five base hits. Four ol the Grants Pass safeties were infield hits. Roseburg tied the game by con tinuing the three runs an inning habit. Livingston led off reaching first on an error. Wells advanced Livingston to second on a fielders choice and Dietz brought Ihe run in with a long double. Beamer walked and Lindbloom followed with a single scoring Dietz. Beamer scored when Gene Wagner struck out and the catcher missed the ball allowing Wagner to reach first. Grants Pass scored a single run in the fifth inning to regain the lead. The final Grants Pass run crossed the plate in the seventh frame. Roseburg Scores In 7th Roseburg collected three runs again in the seventh inning lo take the lead back. Ken Ayrcs walked and Jim Smith was hit by a pitch ed ball. With two outs Dietz hit a hard ground ball to the short-stop which went through the infield and allowed one run to score with Smith going to third and Dietz to second. Both runners crossed the plate when Beamer singled. The final two insurance runs came in the ninth inning for Rose burg. Livingston singled and went to second on a fielders choice. George Sanders walked to put run ners on first and second. Droscher reached first on a fielders choice with Livingston being forced at third. A pass ball and a wild pitch al lowed Sanders to score with Dro scher moving to third. Peamer then connected for a double to drive the final run of the ball game across. Deubleheader Split By Drain The Drain Black Sox came through in the first game of the doubleheader with Beaverton Sat urday night to win 116 while Beaverton edged the Black Sox in the second game 6-5. Drain's bats were booming in the first game as the Black Sox col lected 13 hits to score H runs. While Drain was circling tho bases the Beaverton Taggarts could only score six runs on seven base hits. In the second game the Taggarts managed to score six runs again, but Drain could only rally for five. The split in the doubleheader gives Drain a season record of 35 wins and 13 losses. Drain took Sunday and todav off to travel to Canada. The Black Sox will begin competition in the La co mbe Tournament tomorrow.
