Agree On Price
LOS ANGELES (AP) Settle

nery price for tuna will send ap
proximately 1,200 west coast fih
inc vessels to sea again Friday.
The fleet has been lied up for
two weeks.
Albacore fishermen, including
300 Los Angeles harbor boat
owners, agreed Thursday to ac
cept a cannery price of $375 a
ton, said Harry Lund, chairman
of a fleet negotiating committee.
This is a raise ot $59 a ton.
I.und said canneries also agreed
to post a minimum 48-hour notice
of any future price change.
Cannery officials were not avail
able for comment.
The fleet, operating from Seattle
to San Diego, was beached in
protest against a cannery price
of $325 a ton, based on the amount
canneries were paying for Japa
nese albacore.
Some of the west coast boat
owners unloaded their catch on
the docks when the tie-up started,
and offered their fish direct to
consumers. Others sold to super
market operators. But about 600
tons was still under refrigeration
in the holds of boals moored in
,os Ango harbor when the dis
pute was settled yesterday. The
albacore then was unloaded at
Terminal Island, boat owners
drawing lots for places In line.
The tie-up was over, but Inde
pendent fishermen had lost almost
one-fifth of their season.
At Astoria, Ore., it was re
ported the $375 a ton price will
prevail. But, in ports south of
Astoria in Oregon, the offer was
$25 lower.
Improvement Noted
On Newport Beach

tary Authority investigator today
reported some foam and stench
still present on the beach at New
port, but it. was not at once cer
tain that legal action would fol
low against the Georgia Pacific
Corp.
The stale agency earlier had
told the firm to stop polluting tlio
beach there by today or a court
injunction would be sought.
Curtis Kverts Jr., slate sani
tary engineer, said the investiga
tor's report would be reviewed
and it probably would be Monday
before a decision on whether to go
to courl.
He said the agency's legal coun
sel was tied up in circuit court
in Portland today on a hearing
over the i'ortland sewage situa
tion. The Georgia-Pacific pulp mill
at Toledo was blamed lor me
i,tench and foam, which Newport
residents said were ruining the
beach and the tourist business.
The mill pipes its waste fluids to
the ocean off Newport.
W. J. Sbellon, mill manager,
said crews had rushed completion
of a settling lagoon and it went
into operation Thursday. He snid j
he expected it to correct the situ
ation. Beach residents said Thursday
they considered the situation
greatly improved.
