There's Gold Under
Stella's Tresses
HOLLYWOOD (AP) The guy
who coined the phrase "Hollywood
dumb blonde" didn't know his
proboscis from a peroxide bottle.
in tne Drains department the
fair-haired gals, from Jean Har
low to Marilyn Monroe and Jaync
Mansfield, run a close second to
the bald-headed guys with big
cigars.
Stella Stevens is the latest ex
ample. There's gold under Stella's
golden tresses, pardner. The little
lady has turned film producer.
While others were twidding
their unemployment checks during
the recent actors' strike, Stella
formed a company and made a
movie.
"It's a documentary, a day in
the life of Beverly Hills," says
Stella in the dulcet tones of what
remains of a soft Southern accent.
"Beverly Hills, the strip tease
queen?" asked her interviewer, a
chap of obvious plebeian tastes.
"No, silly," said Stella, fire
showing in her blue eyes. "It's
a story of what happens during
one day in Beverly Hils, the city.
You know, where the movie stars
live."
"Sort of a travelogue?" asked
the interviewer, trying to show a
touch of class.
"No," said Stella, louder. "It's
an hour-long feature in color and
Cine-nascope and we may get a
film festival prize, it's that good."
Stella's chief claim to Holly
wood fame has been a few bit
and TV parts and a fat role as
Appassionata von Climax in the
movie "L'il Abner." So produc
ing a movie was quite a switch.
"My dressmaker, Rudy Gunner
man, put up the money," Stella
said. "And Dan O'Herlihy (broth
er of actor Mike O'Herlihy) di
rected and narrates."

Miss Ure believes that Ameri
can stars demand ridiculously
high salaries.
"It's absurd to think an actress
is worth a million dollars a pic
ture," she says. "It's equally ab
surd for an actress to work for
what we make in England. There
should be a happy middle
ground."
"Sons and Lovers" opened re
cently to rave reviews in London,
especially for Miss Ure. It looks
like a 2V4-million-dollar movie.
"Actually." she discloses, "it
cost only $630,000 to make. See
what I mean about low wages?"
Miss Ure, one of the most bril
liant young British actresses in
years, is here on a stage tour
with Vivien Leigh in "Duel of Angels."

Soviet Action Held
A Reckless Threat1
WASHINGTON (AP)-The Unit
ed States accused the V.S.S.R. to
day of making "a reckless threat
test against the alleged buzzing of
Soviet ships by American planes.
In a formal note delivered to
Moscow today, the State Depart
ment vigorously rejected the com
plaint that aerial inspection of So
viet ships violates the internation
al law and freedom of the seas.
The Soviet Union claimed in a
note sent eieht days ago that U.S.
planes on 250 instances have made
low-level dangerous passes over
Soviet ships.
The State Department noted
that in its complaint the Soviet
government said it would be
obliged "to take other measures
which will be necessary to ensure
the safety of navigation of Soviet
vessels in open seas."
In its renlv. the State Depart
ment fired a blast against the
U.S.S.R. for using such language.
"This can not be interpreted
other than as a reckless threat of
aggressive action against the
United States aircraft proceeding
on legitimate flights over inter
national waters," it said.
