Warden Paul j Squier of the state correctional institution said Tuesday. Squier said the crossed eyes ! apparently were responsible for I the fact that the 35-ycar-old in I mate had lived the life of a hobo ! and eventually got into trouble. "When I first saw the man," Squier said, "he wouldn't look at anybody and wouldn't talk. He just stared down at the floor. "After a very difficult operation on Jan. 8, his attitude changed. He started going to school, and his whole personality began to change." The inmate was given a second operation Monday. This one was minor, and was a continuation of the work done at the first one. He is serving time for threaten ing to kill a man with a paring knife. This is his first felony con viction, although he had been ar rested many times on drunk and assault charges. Squier said the man now is talk ing about his plans to get a job something he's never had. The surgery was performed by a Portland doctor. Squier said the operation was difficult because a muscle was at tached to scar tissual instead of the eye. The surgeon had to cut the muscle away from the scar tissue and sew it on to the eye. 443 S.
