Son-ln-Law Held
In Fatal Shooting
DETROIT (AP)-"lle always
Interfered. He always tried to tell
me what lo do."
Police said Gerald Griswold, 21.
gave this explanation for the fatal
shooting of bis minister father-in-
law in suburban Belleville annuity
meht.
, The Rev. El wood A. McQuaid,
S3, pastor . of Bethany Community
Church, was shot seven times be
fore horrified parishioners in the
church parking lot.
"My father-in-law's biggest
complaint was that I wasn't re
ligious enough," Griswold told of
ficers. "1 attended all the church
services, but I had to leave some
of them early to go to work."
Griswold, a supermarket stock
clerk, married the minister'?
stepdaughter, Judith, 20, about 16
months ago. The couple had been
separated three times. Griswold
said ho had filed for divorce.
"My father-in-law married us,
but he wholeheaitedly approved
of our separation," police said
Griswold told them. He it held for
investigation of murder.
Police said Griswold told them
the final blow was ins stepfather's
heart attack Sunday. He said his
stepfather, Joseph Balqte, 52,
worried about the couple's mar
tial difficulties.
Griswold's wife, the church
pianist, was In tiie church when
the shooting began. "I looked
out," she told police. "My father
was on the, ground and Jerry wa.s
still shooting. Mother threw her
soLf on lop of father's body. One
of the men came running and
grappled with Jerry. 1 pulled
mother away. I
"1 asked Jerry why he did It. 1
He said because my father ha J
put his father in a hospital."
McQuaid was killed by bullets
from a .22 caliber rifle. Parish-1
loners held Griswold for police. '
