Traditional Holiday Favorites Are Recommended For 4th Of July By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Housewives searching for a safe and sane menu for the Fourth of July weekend can choose from a variety of traditional holiday fa vorites. These range in price from ham burger to steak and include such standbys as ham and frying or now you can liave ipermanent beauty... permanent protection... permanent finish. ff In aluminum awnings by For FREE Estimate without obligation CALL OR 3-5491 ROSEBURG VENETIANS AND DRAPERIES "For Well-Dressed Windows" 214 S. E. Jackson broiling chicken. Frankfurters and luncheon meats also are fre quent specials. The price gap between ham burger and steak is illustrated in the New York metropolitan area, where one chain offers' ground chuck at 69 cents a pound com pared with another's sirloin at 79 cents a pound. These prices are up a bit from the 1959 holiday while fryers are about the same. Steaks are trimmed as much as 20 cents a pound from last week over a fairly wide area. Leg of lamb is marked down in scat tered sections but fryers cost more in areas where they're not on the bargain list. Pork chops also are slightly higher in some places. Traditional Fourth of July vege tables and fruit also are on tap. Corn is rated a good buy, while nearby potatoes, watermelons and peaches are outstanding bargains. Best bets among vegetables are snap beans, beets, cabbage, cu cumbers, squash, spinach, radish es and green onions. You can get good Buys, too, from broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, , eggplant, en dive, escarole, lettuce, onions and green peas. Fruits, too, present a wide choice at this time of year. Be sides watermelons and peaches, the outstanding bargain list in cludes blueberries, cantaloups, limes, plums and bananas. Treasury In Black As Books Are Closed For The Fiscal Year NEW ' YORK (AP) -' Thanks mainly to the taxpayers, the U.S. Treasury is using black ink today as it closes, its books, for the fis cal year. y j This is good news to all those who fear further monetary infla tiona mainspring for a rising cost of living, although there are other pressures, too. Also the Treasury is going to borrow less new money in the coming next six months than in any second half for several years. This is good news for all oth ers who want to borrow state and local government agencies, corporations, and individuals. ' It means there will be less compe tition for the available funds and perhaps somewhat easier borrow ing terms. . The taxpayers' get the major credit for the happier fiscal days in Washington because the Treas-. ury is collecting more from indi vidual income tax returns. Part of this is because rising prices this year have meant larg er tax withholding payments. And returns filed by individuals have been running higher. Some i.iihk mis is because of the drive to make taxpayers more con scientious about reporting divi dend and interest receipts. But the Agriculture Department has been doing its bit, too, to help out the Treasury. Because of low er price support spending for corn and unusually heavy export sales of cotton, the Agriculture Depart ment hasn't spent as much re cently as earlier it had been ex pected to. Although the books won't be tallied for several days yet, it now seems sure that budget' rev enues for the 12 months ending WATCHES AND DIAMONDS N ' ' Discontinued Stylet and Models ALL BRAND NEW, FULLY GUARANTEED MERCHANDISE You'll Hove to SEE These Values to Believe, th LOW, LOW PRICES ' f Early Bird Speelol , 49 Diamond V I BRIDAL SET J V OO50 ,A Only 7 7. j Outstanding Value ' 3 Diamond j DINNER RING 1 Special k6775i nurse I type y WATCH I Waterproof 7-J j Lunt. Most guesses now put the budget surplus at 500 million dollars or better, r The Treasury late today will an nounce the terms of its first cash borrowing for the fiscal year starting Friday. The Treasury al ways nas to Borrow new . money in the last six months of a cal endar year because tax payments are slow then. It hopes to repay these borrowings in the first six months of 1961 when tax payments reach their peak'. Prospects now are for the Treasury to seek about 6'A billion dollars in cash between July 1 and Jan. 1. In the last three years its borrowing in the July-through- December period has run closer to lO'i billion. V If the Treasury tap's the money mareet lor lour DUiion.iewer dol lars this fall and winter, there will be just that much , more for other borrowers to divvy up be tween themselves. . ine- final days of the congres sional session will have a lot to do in determining how much of a Treasury surplus can be ex pected in the fiscal year. Spend ing bills are piled high on the log jam in the final days of the session. And the trend of business from now until next June will play a major role, too. If business is good and incomes are high, in dividual tax returns will be high. If profits rise, so will corporate income tax payments. If not but that's another story.
