Lockivood Squad Topples Grove, 1 5-2 WiiGives Roseburg Nine Tie For Second In League By NIELEN CELLERS News-Review Sporti Writer Lockwood Motors Legion Juniors unleased a 13-bit attack to defeat Cottage Grove, 15-2, in a Douglas Lane Legion League game played at Cottage Grove Sunday. Combined with the Legion's hit ting attack was the four-hit pitch ing performance of Tom 'Hobbs. After the first inning Hobbs kept the hits and walks well scattered to prevent Cottage Grove from threatening too seriously. Hobbs allowed two hits in the first inning before settling sown. The next Cottage Grove hit came in the fourth inning,, and the last . blow came in the seventh frame. Four Cottage Grove, base runners reached first via walks and one was hit by the pitcher. Hobbs struck out 12 men. Roseburg's bats came to life in the first inning for five hits and six runs, Jim Jarvis started the rally with an infield single. Jarvis ad vanced to second on a single by Dennis Arana and crossed the plate when Gordon Avery belted a sin gle to center field. Kiser Homers With two men on and two out Tom Hatfield singled to right field to score Avery. Koyce Kiser step ped to the plate, and with a two ball, one-strike count, blasted one over the left centerfield fence for the games only home run. Jim Beamer was hit by the pitch er and went to second when Hobbs walked, Marv French coming up for his second time in the inning was safe on an error on the Cot tage Grove shortstop. Beamer ad vanced to third on the boot and scored easily o a wild pitch. Cottage Grove started off with a bang in the first inning as Howard and Hinds, the first two men, sin gled. On Hinds' single and an er ror in right field, Howard scored and Hinds went to third. Hinds scored on a wild pitch and Hobbs took control for the rest of the game. Cottage Grove's only other threat came in the sixth inning when Shoberg walked and advanc ed to second as Hubbard was hit by a pitched ball. With two men out and runners on first and sec ond, Hobbs whirled trying to catch Shoberg off base.' Instead he caught him as he broke for an attempted steal and easily picked him off to end the threat. Roseburg came back after the first inning barrage to add three more runs in the second inning to make the score 9-2. Arana reached first base on an error and confin ed to second on a single by Bill Franks. Both runners scored when Kiser singled to right field and the ball got past the fielder, allowing Kiser to circle the bases. Winners Keep Scoring Lockwood Motors added single runs in the third and fifth frames to the game before breaking loose for three runs again in the sixth. In the third Roseburg's run resulted from a double by French and a sin gle by Arana. In the fifth, French again scored. He walked, advanced to third on a single by Arana and scored on the catcher's throwing error. Cottage Grove erros gave Rose burg its runs in the sixth inning. Kiser reached base on an error by the center fielder,- Joe Brady walk ed, and Hobbs reached first on an error on the shortstop. French then collected the only hit of the inning, a single to centerfield which the centerfielder missed allowing French to get to third and three f- jv.; a L 1 A LnJ ROYCE KISER . . . over the fence! runs to score. Roseburg scored the final run of tne game, and their fifteenth for the contest, in the seventh in ning. Walt Edmonds singled and continued around to the plate as a result of an unsuccessful field er's choice and two Cottage Grove errors.- He hit a -sharp ground ball to the shortstop in the sixth innine. which the shortstop bobbled before throwing to first. The play at first was very close, ana Jarvis claimed the first baseman did not touch the bag. He told the umpire and after several repetitions, the um pire informed Jarvis he was not only out at first base, but out of the ball game. .
