2 The News-Review, Roseburg,
Drive 'n Save Market is one of
the largest in the Roseburg area
and one of the most modern super
markets in the Pacific Northwest.
It opened for business today in
the Garden Valley Shoomne Cen
ter, located west of Highway 99
f reeway on inw Garden v auey
Blvd.
The building, facing south, is
set 600 feet back from the high'
way to provide a large parking
' area and future business locations.
The concrete and block building
makes extensive use of glass
across tne iront, Deneatb a diamond-shape
pattern canopy, which
extends out over tne walkway.
Entrance is through modern
type, automatic, in-and out doors.
Eight checking stands, each equip-
pea witn .me latest-type casn reg
isters, greets the shopper on enter
ing the store. These cash registers,
the first to be installed in this
area, have remote control, ' under
counter 'cash drawers, permitting
the checker to face the customer
at all times.
Spaciousness of the market im
presses the viewer. Display islands
are piled high with every type of
merchandise. Some 6,000 separate
items, multiplied many times by

WERNER BUEHLER, who will
. be manager of the meat depart
ment for Drive 'n' Save Market,
has lived in Oregon most of the
last 25 years.. . ... :
He spent six years in southern
California, where he recently work
ed for a supermarket and also saw
-service in the navy.
He has been in the meat busi
ness and around meats most of
his life, working in both the whole
sale and retail divisions.
He attended schools in Drain and
in Grants Pass. He is married and
he and his wife, Dollie, have two
sons, Werner 6 and Mark 4.

The unusual ceiling, using a
modified V pattern, is covered with
accoustical . plaster, which was
blown on. This not only cuts down
on sound, - but is also a fire re
sistant agent. The fire resistant,
enclosed glu-laminated beams and
accoustical plaster give the mar
ket a two-hour fire rated ceiling,
reducing insurance costs. ..
- The building is fully air con
ditioned for uniform summer and
winter temperature. Gas heat is
used. Fluorescent lighting through
out makes the place - as light as
day.
To the left, on the west side
of the store, is an information
booth. Stairs lead up to offices,
rest rooms, lunchrooms, furnace
room and additional storage space
on the upper level.
Large Meat Department
This second story 'extends out
over the large meat department.
There are 68 feet of fresh meat
cases, where packaged meat is
sold. All meat is delivered by re
frigerated trucks directly into re
frigerated rooms on overhead
tracks. The meat is brought into
the cutting room by a 48-foot, cold
flow conveyor system. At no time
is it exposed to the warm air un
til purchased and taken from the
store by the customer.
Extensive use is made of cases
for frozen foods and items need
ing refrigeration. There are 28
feet of smoked meat cases, 24
feet of frozen meat cases, 76 feet
of frozen food cases, 20 feet of
ice cream cases, 48 feet of dairy
and cheese cases, 68 feet of pro
duce refrigerated cases, for a
grand total of 380 feet. There also
is a 12-door reach-in beverage

STEVE PENCE is man
ager of the variety department at
Drive V Save Market.
A former resident of Roseburg,
where he attended local schools, he
is 24 and has had six years of ex
perience with the F. W. Woolworth
and W. T. Grant Company stores.
He started with the Woolworth
store in Roseburg. His last ad
dress was Martinez, Calif.
His wife and four children are
still in California, and he will move
them here as soon as he can find
housing.

Math is Construction Co. His basic
bid of $199,800, with certain spe
cified alternates, included construc
tion of the building, drainage or
the land and Installation ot lignts
for the parking area.
Preparation of the parking area
was under seDarate contract to J.
R. McAllister and the blacktopping
was done by KoseDurg raving.

Unloading Convenience
According to General Manager
Herb Totman, special care has
been given to arrangements for
unloading meats, produce and oth
er merchandise to give a minimum
of handling from truck to display
cases or counters, iiamps lor easy
unloading are provided to the rear.
DISPLAY ISLANDS are-stacked high at the new Drive 'n' Save Market, which opened for
business today. The wide assortment numbers more than 6,000 items, which includes
just about anything one can ask for in the way of household supplies and foods. It took
