. OKLAHOMA CITY AP) The
south wind always a factor in
Oklahoma goit tournaments re
sumed Thursday after being calm
several days but it didn't stop
Ernie Vossler and Bobby Goetz
from grabbing the lead in the
first round of the Oklahoma City
Open.
Vossler, a veteran from Mid
land, Tex., and Goetz, a rookie on
the professional circuit from Tul
sa, Okla., fired 5-under par 66's
over the 6,440-yard, par 71 Twin
Hills Country Club course.
The 72-hole, $30,000 tournament
ends Sunday.
Hot on the trail of Goetz and
Vossler going into today's second
round was Johnny Pott of Shreve
port, La., who carved out a 35-32
67.
Arnold Palmer, the defending
champion, started with a 2-over
par 37 on the front nine then
closed with five birdie putts for a
31 and a 68 total that tied him
with Bob McCallister of Yorba
Linda, Calif., Tommy Jacobs of
Bermuda Dunes, Calif., and Don
Fairfield of Casey, 111.
A large group at 69, still well
in contention, included Julius Bo
ros, Doug Sanders, Lionel Hebert
and Gardner Dickinson Jr.
Grid Season Sales Up
SEATTLE (AP) Coasting on
a thick cushion of petals from the
Hose Bowl game, the University
of Washington appears headed for
a record year in the advance sale
of season tickets for the 1960 foot
ball season.
Ticket manager Ivan Travis
said Thursday the sales, "should
equal or surpass" the peak year
of 1951 when 14,870 season seats
were sold. Stadium capacity is
55,000.
The Huskies, Rose Bovd victors
over Wisconsin, will play six home
games next fall, opening against
College of the Pacific. The re
maining opponents are Idaho,
Navy, UCLA, Oregon and California.
Next stop for the Braves is Eu
gene and a crowded weekend se
ries with the second-place Emer
alds. Tri-Cities will have three
consecutive doubleheaders i n
which to try to wrest the second
rung from Eugene.
Improvement Noted
Tri-Cities has steadily improved
all season long. The Braves moved
out of fifth-place into fourth May
15, broke over the .500 won-lost
mark May 30 and kept plugging
away. Now in third with a slight
percentage lead over Lewiston,
the Braves are only two games
back of Eugene and three behind
front-running Yakima.
Fred Bick has been one reason
for Tri-Cities' improved Braves.
The NWL's leading hurler upped
his record to 9-1 with his neat
seven-hitter over Salem Thursday
night. His mates got him four runs
in the first frame and the Braves
were off to the races.
Bob Nelson got his ninth homer
of the year for Tri-Cities final run
in the fifth inning.
Yakima came from behind with
four runs in the seventh to beat
Lewiston. The Broncs, who col
lected 13 hits including five don
bles and a pair of triples, . were
leading tfte ears 6-a going into
tne sevemn.
Four Scored
Yakima loaded the bases in that
frame, then scored twice on John
Garofalo's single and twice more
when Len Tucker's towering cen-
terfield fly was dropped.
At Eueene. the Emeralds
shelled two Wenatchee hurlers for
16 hits, while Eugene's Jack Sim
mons was allowing only four safe
ties. Anne Hallgren drove in bom
runs for the Chiefs, on a homer
in the sixth and a double in the
flishth.
Besides the Tri-Cities-at-Eugene
series opener Friday night, the
schedule has wenatcnee at aaiem
and Yakima at Lewiston.
