Grand Jury Lowers Murder Indictment KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) The grand jury here Tuesday reduced a murder indict m e n t against an 18-year-old AWOL Fort Ord, Calif., soldier to voluntary manslaughter. Bernard Fitzpatrick had been charged with first degree murder in an April 7 indictment tor me stabbing of Ralph Ray Lawson, Pasco, Wash., last Jan. 31. But when he again went before the grand jury Tuesday it handed down the lesser charge. Dist. Atty. Arthur Bcddoe said new evidence nau resulted in re submission of the case. The body of Lawson, stabbed fatally, was found dumped in snow along a highway at Mount Hood, east of Portland. Fitzpatrick was arresieu laier near aeaiue. Police said Fitzpatrick had killed Lawson after hitch-hiking a ride with him. The murder trial first v scheduled for May 10, then for May 31. Finally that date was cancelled and, at his attorney's request, he again went before the grand )urv. Circuit judge uavid R. Vnndcnborg set Thursday morning for him to plead to the new charge. Officer Says Lama's Escape Impossible DARJEELING, India (AP) A Chinese security officer and mem ber of the Tibetan Communist party who fled to India said it is impossible for the Pan chen Lama to escape from Lhasa. The Chinese, Dhondup Llowa-' zang, asid ho ilieved that a re port that the ranchen Lama is fleeing toward India is completely false. He suggested the reDort was planted by the Chinose to enable a personal denial Dy tho Panchen Lama of this and other reports o recent severe fighting in Tibet. Quoting "reliable reports," the Hindustan Standard of Calcutta said the Panchen Lama eluded his guards and was trying to reach safety in India.
