Graf plans to give private instrumental lessons and will also give individuals instruc tion to children who are entering the fifth grade this fall and wish to play in the band. Except for the private instru mental lessons, Graf will be donat ing his time for this program in the hope of improving the school's music program generally and pro viding an outlet for Canyonville children who enjoy music. Charter Presented James Hancock, Boy Scout neigh borhood commissioner, formally presented the Canyonville Cub Pack No. 125 charter to the spon soring organization, the Lions' Club, at the last meeting of the pack for the year held recently in the Youth Center.. Hancock also presented member ship cards to all pack leaders. Cub master Charles Dowd presented bear badges to Joe Adams and Bruce Clouser and called attention to the extensive handcraft exhibits displayed by each den. SEAT0 To Assess Red Threat In Asia WASHINGTON (APV-Too mili tary advisers of the eight-nation Southeast Asia Treaty Organiza tion begin a reassessment today of the Communist threat in Asia following collapse of the Paris summit meeting. -Assembled here for the 12th SEATO military advisers confer- ence were three admirals, three generals and two air marshals with their staffs, representing the senior military leaders of Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand, tne fimrppines, mauana, rams tan and the United States. The alliance is pledged to resist aggressive Communist expansion in the treaty area which includes Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia under SEATO's mantle of protec tion. - The military men are charged with turning out a report for the guidance of foreign ministers of the eight countries who convene here May 31. Many of the SEATO military claiming staff consider the pos sibility of a Chinese Communist- directed move against Viet Nam and Laos to be heightened. Re ports of reinforcements to Chinese Communist garrisons and air bases rimming the Chinese Na tionalist islands of Quemoy and Matsu also are nemg weignea. 11 E. Dr. Leland Van Allen and fam ily drove to. Portland recently. where he attended a dental study club meeting. The group continued on to Malhur Lake where they went birdwatching. Dr. VanAllen identi fied 75 different species of birds and also hunted arrowheads. The George James family have Camas Valley Couple Returns From Recent Trip By MRS. WILLIAM BANKS Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Jones have returned to their home in Camas Vallev following a trro to visit the latter's sister, Mrs. Albert Aimer, and family in Havre, Mont. The Joneses visited in Eastern Oregon and enjoyed points of in terest .in Idaho en route to Mon tana. On their journey home they remained overnight m Eugene and visited their son, Glenn, who is a student at the University of Ore gon. Lie WASHINGTON (AP) A White House aide says the United States first lied about the U2 plane to give pilot Francis G. Powers a chance to escape. Robert E. Merriam, deputy as sistant to the President, Tuesday gave that version of the incident to the women's division of the Capitol Hill Club, a Republican group. ' After the Soviet Union reported that a plane had crossed its bor ders, 'the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the State Department said that a V2 plane on a, weather reconnais sance flight, was missing. When the Soviets then an nounced the plane had been shot down and the pilot captured, the State Department admitted the Slane had' been on an espionage ight. ' Merriam said Powers was un der instructions to try to escape if he was forced down. He had elaborate equipment, to do so, the White House aide said. Merriam said the weather story was released to help Powers get out of the country if be were still alive. Merriam did not say who had made the decision to make up the weather flight story. Earl Parrett is returning to work in the woods in the near future, but Mrs. Parrett will be at home to receive orders ' for the mer chandise the Parretts have. ' Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Goodwin have purchased the Cecil Halter man home in the upper Camas area. They plan to move in the near future.- Members of the Camaa Valley Grange are asked to please note that the regular meeting of the Grange will be held on June 7 at 8 p.m. at the Grange Hall.
