Losses were chalked up in eight
rural counties, the big shock com

area where the 1960 census was
listed at 29,804, a drop of nearly
12,000 from the 1950 census of
41,703.
County Judge D. R. Look called
the figure "unbelievable." He and
other officials said they knew of
nothing to account for a popula

Homer Rainey. district census
director at Bend, said it was pos
sible the Umatilla figure as an
nounced did not include Pendle
ton's population of 14,347. He began
a check on that.
If Pendleton were added in,
Umatilla County's population
would go up to 44,151, a gain of
nearly 3,000 over 1950.

Grant. Clatsop had the biggest
drop of that group; a loss of 3,783.

Joe Lane Students
Favor Salary Hike
The eighth grade of Joseph Lane
school is a little more open-handed
with the legislators' pay than
were the voters of either Douglas
County or the state as a whole.
They thought the pay increase
should go through, in their own
"mock" election. The vote was 22
yes and 5 no. (The duly author
ized voters, of course, turned it
down Friday).
They tabbed the district judge
race runoff between Gerald Hayes
and Thomas Hartfiel on the but
ton. Both Hartfiel and Hayes were
given 10 votes and Gerald KaDier
trailed with 6.
Don Sanders outdistanced War
ren Woodruff 13 to 8 for circuit
judge, but at least they picked the
finalists. (Woodruff had the regu
lar voters' nod). Dan Dimick witn
4 and John Horn with 2 also came
out in the right order, in compan
son with Fridav results.

more taxes to raise it. At least
Leslie P. Fleming, the anti-tax de
feated U.S. Representative candi
date, took the class nod from Ed

Geddes 'Wins'
Paul Geddes squeezed through
as national convention GOP com

nearest rival Fayette Bristol 4.
Sen. John Kennedy blanked Sen.

he had the nod from the class for

They balloted on that delegate-at-large

it. Al Flegel ran well up, in pass

It was a classroom exercise in
