He was born in Wiscon sin and came to the Pacific North west in 1910 and soon thereafter accepted the Bible doctrines as taught by the Seventh-day Adven tist denomination. He spent 25 years as a literature evangelist in Alontana and Oregon. In 1928 he was married to Laura Biksen, an Adventist Church School teacher, who, with their daughter, l'ancy, and the latter's two children, sur vive. Airs. It is a profes sion, not a way of life. Too many people in Hollywood forget that they are men and women first, and actors second. They bring their roles home from the studio and try to live them at home. "A man is a man and a woman is a woman. No matter if he wins an academy award, it means noth ing if he does not have under standing at home. Women especially are emo tional; that is their nature. An actress deals in emotions in her work. If she continues playing the part at home, the result is chaos. "Alan was meant to be domi nant. When an actress' career zooms higher than her actor hus band's, it is an impossible situa tion. Soon she starts paying the bills. He cannot stand by and re tain his self respect." As to his own household, Lamas admitted he retains a Latin view of male superiority in the home. "From the start, I insisted on paying all the bills," the Argentine actor said. "Arlene can do what ever she wants with the money she earns. But I have never al lowed her to say '1' concerning anything about the house. It is always 'we.' I am the only one who can say 'I' and I don't choose to. I also say 'we.' "Fortunately she had an old world style of Norwegian upbring ing in which the male was leader of the family. And luckily, she is not crazy for a career, if a role comes up, fine. Otherwise she is content to stay at home. She will adjust her plans to mine." 1 wonder how many other Amer ican wives would go for this part or the Lamas marital plan: two night s a week, he goes out' alone. I know it surprises people, he said. "But at least twice a week I tell Arlene, 'I'm going to the fights with some friends' or some-! times I don t even tell her where I'm going. "This is very important to me. I have to feel that I am still free. Of course, 1 have to stay out of t-ouble. And I've been a good boy. There are too many columnists who would love to report that I was straying." Christmas Card Late ALBANY, N.Y.
