Group Holds Meet

Temperance Council of Looking
glass met recently with the coun
selor, Mrs. Fred Soulhwick for dis
cussion of several of th group'
activities.
The council will make a study of
two text books, "It's Smarter Not
To Drink" and "Don't Let Smok
ing Kill You."
The youths mado posters which
with other literature, will be dis
tributed in observance of Youth
Temperance Education Week re
cently announced for the state by
Gov. Hatfield.
Officers for the group include
JoAnn Settles, president; Gloria
Wright, vice president; Given
jsieng, corresponding secretary;
Shirley Jones, treasurer; Judy Gil
lette, recording secretary; and Car
olyn Fowler, song leader.
New members joining the group
at their last meeting were Doug
las White, Jimmie Hudson, Jack
Gillette and Danny Jones.
The YTC is a subsidiary of the
Woman's Christian Temperance
Union and the members will assist
in temperance education being con
ducted through the Loyal Temper
ance Legion for the children of
this area.

On Milo Academy Roll
Of the 75 young people on Milo
Academy's spring mid - semester
honor roll, 11 were from Roseburg.
They are Ronnie Age, Lynda
Cook, Bud Dickerson, Jim Gregg,'

etta Kruse, Kenneth McFarland
Jr., Bernie Paulson, Anita Person
and Bert Pearson.

nled for the weekend of May 27 to
29. with a consecration service
Friday evening and the presenta
tion of diplomas Sunday.

Honored By Band
Gene "Mill. Earleyne Davis and
Mary Thompson from Yoncalla
High School were honored recently
when they were chosen to play in
the Utiipitu Valley League Honor
Band.
Gaylon Bledsoe, music supervi
sor, conducted a musical selection
from "The King and I." Eight
bands were represented and each
music supervisor directed one number.
Tony Fritz Adjudged
Milo Academy Winner
In recent American Temper
ance Society sponsored oration con
test at Milo Academy, Tony Fritz
was judged winner of first prize
and sent to the state Academy at
Caldwell, Idaho for the regional!.
Fritz won fourth place in the re
gional. Milo also conducted a temper
ance jingle contest in which Ken
neth McFarland Jr., of Roseburg
won bom first and second prizes.
GIRLS STATE REP. PICKED
Sherry White, a junior at Doug
las High School, has been selected
as a representative to Girls State
by the Women's Auxiliary of the
American Legion in Roseburg.
Sherry White, who is 16, is sec
retary of the student council, a
varsity cheerleader, and historian
of the DHS Pep Club. Sherry was
chosen on citizenship, scholarship.

Girls State will be held at Wil
tamette University in Salem, June
1319. Sherry is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. White of Win
ston.

"Cascade Day." the annual vis-
itation day for high school seniors,
w ill be held at Cascade College in j
Portland, Oregon, on Saturday,
May 14. . I
Tha activities will begin at S
a.m. with registration in the chap
el, and will include a free dinner, I
a lour of the campus, class visi
tation, an address by President
Edison Hahegger, and a program
featuring the departments of the
college, softball in the park (as
visiting seniors participate with
Cascadians), and the feature of
the day: our School Play, "The
Bi? Fisherman."
The purpose of this day is to
acauaint high school seniors with
Cascade College. A special invi
tation is given to those interested
in an interdenominational Chris
tian institution of higher learning.
Cascade, a fully accredited liberal
arts college, is located at 705 North
Killingsworth Street, Portland if,
Oregon.
Queen Introduced

ble Academy young people and pa
trons at Sunday afternoon's Mel
ody Hour in the auditorium.
The Queen's court, with repre
sentatives from all CBA classes,
presented a background of driils
to point up the introductions. The
queen will be officially crowned
during the Spring Festival and
honor night celebration Thursday,
May 19.
Following the Melody Hour, the
Queen and her court were honored
at dinner in the dining hall with
decorations of lavender and sil
ver, the senior class colors, point
ing up the May Day theme of the

Glide High Holds
Roll Election
Glide High Student Body held an
election recently for members of
the Rally Squad for 1960-61.
Pal Henry, a junior, won the cov
eted spot as Yell Queen. Other
members of the squad are. Glen
da Kettleman, Sandy Andrus, Sher
on Polley, Mardel Teater and Don
na Weaver.

senior prom and banquet have
heen changed from May 14 to
May 13. The banquet will be in
the high school (gym at 7 p.m.
The date was changed due to a
conflicting track meet in Roseburg
