By HAROLD V. STREETER SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (AP) -Caryl Chessman went to his death today with a smile on his face. I taw him die. It is a disturbing experience. Pearson (D Portland) Wednesday defended the Legislature's action of provid ing only $10,000 to pay the cost of a new medical investigator pro gram. Last week Freeman llolmer, state finance director, and Gov. Mark Hatfield accused the Legis lature of irresponsibility for not providing $42,000 which they said was requested by the stale Board of Health. The bill calls for re placing county coroners with med ical investigators. Pearson said that when the mat ter was before the Legislature, Dr. Harold M. Erickson, who then was head of the state Board of Health, told a committee that not more than $10,000 was needed to get the program started. Pearson added: "The governor should have been aware of these facts when he signed the bill and enacted it into law. If he did not check the Board of Health at the time to find out it could not do it, he should not have signed the i bill. He should have vetoed it."
