Loes the unpredictable was Loes the magnificent Sunday. The 30-year-old relief ace not only hurled three hitlcss and runless innings but singled in the bottom of the 11th and scored the run that gave the Giants a 4-3 triumph over the Chicago Cubs. Third bfseman Jimmy Daven port, whose late season injury was a big factor in the Giants' 1959 collapse, drove in the tie break ing run with a single off relief pitcher Ben Johnson. The victory enabled the Giants to remain in a first place dead lock with the Los Angeles Dodg ers. The defending champions de feated the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 for their third consecutive victory. The defeat was the fifth for the winless Cards. Milwaukee remained a half game behind the leaders, wallop ing the Philadelphia Phillies 8-4 for its third success in four starts. Pittsburgh jumped into fourth place by sweeping a doubleheader from Cincinnati. The Pirates won the opener 5-0 behind the four-hit pitching of Bob Friend, then came from behind with a six-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to nip the Reds 6-5 in the nightcap. Loes was the fourth Giant pitch er, following Mike McCormick. Stu Miller and Jack Sanford. He took over in the 12th, retired six straight batters, then pitched him self out of trouble by getting Dinch hitter Sammy Taylor with two run ners on base in the top of the 14th. The New York born right-han dor, who will not win any honors with his bat, surprised the home crowd of 33,337 by lashing a single off Johnson, third Chicago pitcher, to open the bottom of the 14th. Tribe betters Top Tigers Al Hoffman's Itoscburg tennis team added another victory to its record Saturday afternoon, defeat ing the visiting Junction City Ti gers, 7-0. The Indians had been slated to host the Klamath Falls Pelicans Saturday morning but this match was canceled. In the Junction City meeling, the Indians used five members of Stewart Smith's Tric JV team in posting the victory. Don Harris, Ron Fraback and Rick Bakela, of the junior varsity club, all posted singles triumphs and Mike Harmon and Merlin Sei bole combined for a doubles- vic tory. Alike Brundage and Howard Sohn both won singles matches and Mike Murphy and Morris Kelly teamed for the other doubles win. The doubles triumph posted by Harmon and Seibole was a Kramer Set win by an 8-5 score. Wednesday the Indians have the toughest match of the season slat ed for the local courts as they try the Oregon Frosh. The Indians had this meeting rained out last week.
