12 Tti Newt-Review, Roseburg, Ore. Mon., April 18, 1960 Woman, 56, Still Trails Men Rivals In Rugged Trek SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -Two contitiKcnts of British cross country walkers were on rither sido of lofty Donner Summit to day. For Dr. Barbara Moore that meant a rugged 74-mile climb up the Sierra. But for two British soldiers, it was all downhill as they headed off the 7, 100-foot summit into Ne vada. They hoped to reach Iteno, ib miles away, oy miililiaii. The slay at the summit hotel marked tlie first nifiht that SkIs. Patrick Moloney and Mcrvyn Kv ans had slept outside their station wagon, being driven by an escort. Dr. Moore, out to prove a con nection between vegetarianism and long life, spent the night in nearby Roseville, alter a -is-miio walk across the flat Sacramento Valley. The peppery 56-year-old vege tarian said she wasn't tired, but wanted to start fresh on the up hill trek. Sho hoped to reach the high Sierra peak by dusk. Sgt. .Moloney said, "wc enjoyed the walk uphill. It's easier than fcoing down, you know." When Dr. Moore passed through Sacramento, still buoyant after more than 30 miles of walking and dodging cars on U. b. 40, she ex pressed a desire to catch "those two culprits." Like Dr. Moore, the two ser geants are attempting to break the 79-day, 10-hour record for walking tho 3,032-mile distance from San irancisco to New York Compulsory Training Protested By Students SEATTLE (AP) - Compulsory military training at the University of Washington lias been protested by 1,000 students and faculty members, Dr. Charles JS. Ode gaard, president, disclosed Tues day. Odeganrd said ho had been pre sented with petitions bearing about 1,000 signatures asking an end to compulsory Reserve Offi cers' Training Corps programs at the university, which has an en rollment of more than 16,000. The president said a facully committee study of the programs has been under way since March 25, shortly after the petilions were received. The Navy ROTC program has always been voluntary, Odcgaard said. Tho Air Force ROTC will he changed next fall to allow substi tution of a wide range of aca demic courses for half of the mil itary courses the first two vears. But the Army has renratcdlv emphasized that compulsory ROTC is essential for its program, he added. Prof. L. Wait Rising heads the faculty committee, ho said. The petitioners pointed out that the Army and Air rorce program axe n nours or ciasswork a week the first two years and the Navy inutfiam iaK.es jb nours. Powermen Elect Officers At Meet EUGENE, Ore. Only 3 to 5 PM California High Court Turns Down Chessman SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The California Supreme Court to day denied a petition for a writ of habeas corpus for Caryl Chess man, convicted kidnaper-sex per vert who has spent almost 12 years on death row. At tho same time the court re leased a copy of a letter in which Chessman asked his attorney, George T. Davis, to "withdraw entirely from the ease." The court's denial was without comment other than that the or der was "final forthwith." This preclude's Chessman from pre senting the same point to Liie court again, in the petition Davis contended that Chessman s two capital pun ishment convictions in Los Ange les in 1918 should have carried lite terms, at the most. He said the court erred in sentencing Chess man to death. This was the same contention Davis made earlier before the Marin County Superior Court and the State District Court of Appeal. Both turned him down. He now is under sentence to be executed May 2. Missile Testing Heads Tovard Centralization WASHINGTON (AP) The De fense Department moved here to bring its far-flung system of mis sile and space vehicle test pro grams and facilities under tight central direction. The head of the new setup is Dr. Herbert F. York, director of defense research and engineering. who already holds broad control of most of the military space and missile projects. One objective apparently will be to settle disagreements be tween the Navy and Air Force over what portions of test pro grains are carried out by the Navy's facility at Point Arguello and the Air 1'orce big missile cen ter at Vandenberg, both close to gether on the California coast. 3-Year Old Wins Bout With Train BAKERSI'TELD, Calif.
