Nevada Judge Panel
Sets Death Penalty
RENO (AP) A panel of throe
judges Tuesday sentenced Thayne
Archibald, 22, to the Ras chamber
fur the murder o Larry Waters.

Archibald was captured last fall
in Oregon.
Archibald had pleaded guilty to
shooting Waters twice in the head
on a river bank east of here last
summer after taking Waters hos
tage in a robbery. Archibald's at
torneys argued that he shot after
the boy ran.
The wounds were loss than two
inches apart. Dist. Atly. William
Haggio told the court, adding they
were inflicted deliberately after
Archibald tied the youth's hands
and forced him to kneel.
It was the first sentence by a
panel on a plea of guilty of mur
der. The 1U59 Legislature amended
the law in capital punishment ca
ses because it felt such a decision
was too much responsibility for
one judge.
Archibald's only reaction to the
sentence was a faint hint of a
smile.
lie was captured last Septem
ber in Baker, Ore., in another ser
vice station robbery and taken to
Reno for prosecution.
A confession read to the panel
quoted Archibald, a former cook
as saying he shot Waters to do
away with a witness to kidnaping,
punishable by death in California.
Powers Logger Killed
In Coos Woods Accident
COOS BAY (AP) Willis
Emery Bertell, 32, a Powers log
ger, was killed in a woods acci
dent IS miles southwest of Powers
Monday.
Bertell was hit in the chest by n
small sapling that snapped out of
the ground when a log rolled
against it.
The accident happened in the
upper Sixes River country where
Bertell was working for the Barr
Logging Co.
Survivors 'nclude the widow and
two small children.

Woodson of Portland Tuesday was
elected most illustrious grand
master of the Oregon Crand Coun
cil of Royal and Select Masons.

AFL-C10 Leader Likes
Mark's Industry Try
PORTLAND (AP) Gov. Mark
Hatfield's methods in trying to
bring new industry to Oregon were
praised Tuesday by George Brown
the political education director of
the state AFL-CIO.
Brown told the Junior Chamber
of Commerce:
"Too often in the past, the Ore
gon industrial picture has been
painted in a way that would make
no one want to come here. Gov.
Hatfield is emphasizing the aspects
that make the state attractive to
industry."
Brown also praised attempts to
get the federal government to turn
over to the state, for industrial
use, the Bonrdman Bombing
Range in northeastern Oregon.
"I am satisfied that within a
few months, we will sec people
moving into that area, and the
beginning of construction. This is
evidence that all segments of Ore
gon's economy business, govern
ment and labor are cooperating
with each other," Brown said.
Plans Made By Mothers
Plans were made by the Rose
burg Blue Star Mothers to attend
the state convention, to be neld in
Grants Pass April 28, til a recent
meeting of the group.
A report on a candy sate held the
last of March was given. Mrs.
Flora Broadwater was a guest at
the meeting. Members planned to
visit the Veteran's Hospital Thurs-cay.
