Orbiting Ceases
For Sputnik III
WASHINGTON (AP)-The Unit
ed States officially announced the
death this week of S p u t n i k III,
the Russian satellite launched into
orbit May 15, 1958.
The announcement was made
by the National Space Surveil
lance Control Center at Bedford,
Mass.
The center said the Russian
satellite was last observed by ra
dar earlv Wednesday during the
first part of its 10.035th revolu
tion. This observation was made
at Prince Albert in Saskatche
wan. Canada.
The center estimated that the
satellite either burned up in the
earth's atmosphere or crashed to
earth between 2:45 and 4:45 a.m.
(EST).
When the satellite was launched,
Soviet Scientists said it would
probably remain in orbit indefi
