Own Experiments Claim Life Of Medical Pipneer In X-Ray, Radiation Field CHICAGO (AP) Dr. Emil II Grubbe, pioneer in the field of X-ray and radiation treatment, died Saturday a victim of Ins own scientific experiments. The 85-year-old physician suc cumbed at sweuisn covenant nos DHal. Burned by X-rays in the fall o 1895, Dr. Grubbe was the earliest known victim of man-made radia tion. Me later said that his radi ation burns, which crippled and disfigured him, provided the idea of using radiation for thcrcapcu tic purposes. In 1896, Dr. Grubbe, as a 20-ycar-old physicist, used a beam of X-rays to treat a woman cancer patient. Lalo in lifo, he generally was credited as the father of X ray treatment. Inflation Slowdown Holds Off New Boom In Industry By SAM DAWSON AP Business News Analyst NEW YOKK (AP) Spring is making tentative passes at the na tions economy. Many business men have been nursing an outlook as dreary as the March weather has been. So now the question is: Will spring bring a change in business thinking and consumer spending? Or is industry in for a change deeper than the snowdrifts? The stock market has been a chief psychological culprit. Declin ing stock prices as usual have been going hand in hand with a decline in business confidence. Great expectations that proved too grandiose also have turned business uneasy and to some ex tent consumers too. Steel experts told us at the start of the year that their industry would operate at 95 per cent of capacity until summer. Now a number of furnaces are cooling off and production is below 90 per cent. The outlook for the second quarter is in doubt, as many or ders either are being held up or trimmed. The threat of inflation has played a role first blowing hot and now cooling off. Few things could please the consumer more State Fish Ladder Employe Back On Job After Hearing SALEM (AP) The operator of the Willamette Falls fish ladder will get his job back as a result nf a five-hour civil service hear ing. The Oregon Fish Commission was ordered here to rehire Ma rion Christcnsen, Oregon City. In making the order the Civil Serv ice Commission criticized both Christcnsen and the Fish Commis sion staff. "The commission cannot avoid the suspicion that there is a lack of administrative cohesion in the (fish) department," the Civil Serv ice Commission said. Fisheries Director Albert Day said Christensen was fired March 1 from his $400-a-month job for being "dilatory, evasive, defiant and threatening." The Civil Service ccommission, while criticizing Christcnsen for the way he dealt with orders from higher up. ordered tho Fish Com mission to put him back on the payroll March 28. lie win not re ccive pay for the four weeks bo tween March 1 and 28. The incident which led to Chris tensen's dismissal involved failure to answer questions dealing with now he disposed of salvage fish at the fish ladder near Oregon City. tiie Fish Commission said he had not sold as many fish to an Oregon City fish market as the fish counter showed he received. lie was instructed to sell all of these fish to the market. Supreme Court To Rule On Alabama Annex Law WASHINGTON (AP)-Tho Su premo Court has agreed to rule on villainy ol an A minima law that changed the city limits of Tuske gee and excluded atxuit 400 Ne groes from cily 'leelions. The 1957 law practically elim inated Negro voting in Tuskegec by nutting predominantly Negro residential areas outside the city limits. Tho Supreme Court probably will not hear argument on the case until Us fall term beginning Oct. 3 President To Support Natural Gas Measure WASHINGTON (AP) Piesl- dent Eisenhower say, he is icady j IO support a natural gas hilt 111! this session of t'onsii'ss "with full vior if those in control of Con press iiic some indiration that tlioy will join in this effort." In last! Consrcss passed a bill freeing natural k.is from direct federal price reculalion at the well. Eisenhower vetoed the lull on tho Rround that a small scKincnt of tho industry had encaned in "hi'Khiy questionable activities" in behalf of the measure. Rail Crossings Okayed SALEM (AP) - ruUjr Utility Comissioner Jonel C. ilill has approved construction of two tem porary railroad overcmssinus near Jtufiis, east of The Dalles. Tho crossings wore asked byhe Aroy Engineera in conne'cinm with constructiob of John Day Dam, g,A dolour and the two over Trnssinga will be abandoned after im. Death came to him after years of painful treatment of cancer brought on by constant exposure to X-rays. He underwent 93 oper ations and lost most of both hands and several sections of his face. Despite his affliction, he con tinued in his work and outlived all but one of the doctors who treated him. Last February, tho American Cancer Society bestowed its na tional citation for distinguished service upon him. Last year, Dr. Grubbe turned over most of his assets to the University of Chicago Cancer Re search Foundation. The value of his gift was appraised at $157,. 992.23. than stability of prices unless it would be a decline in prices. But for a time, stock traders and many manufacturers thought that further inflation was both in evitable and likely to be of a snow balling nature. To them this spelled boom in stock prices and in industrial output. The cost of living has gone up of late and prospects are for it to go up more. But the rate has been sedate. Ann it has been in serv ices more than in the prices man ufacturers can put on their prod ucts. Money was supposed to get tighter as the demand for loans outran the supply of credit, in stead, the supply of investment funds has increased faster than the demand for loans. Interest rates have fallen and that is rare y associated with a business boom. So businessmen have turned con servative. Now spring has the chance to put new life into the economy, this is a chance and by no means a certainty. The economy's foundations, how ever, are still firm. And the steady building of prosperity that many foresee can build upon these foun dations. Christcnsen said he didn't have any records because he had never been told to keen any. He said some of the fish which had been given him were spoiled and unsal able. Day and other Fish Commission officials denied Christensen's statement that they had question ed him at "badgering sessions.' They said they were not accus ing him of doing anything illegal. But Day did object to Christen sen's failure to answer some ques tions.
