felarine Visits Wife And Baby In Melrose While On Leave Ike Asks Aid For Colleges By NETTIE WOODRUFF Jim Conn is spending a 25-day leave from Marine Corps duly with his wife and baby son and other relatives in Melrose. He has been overseas for the past seven months, having been to Pearl Harbor, Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines and other points, lis will report back to Long Beach. Calif., at the end of his leave. Mrs. Clarson Chitwood and three sons spent the spring vacation weekend in San Francisco, Calif., with friends and attending to busi ness. Allen Armstrong has returned home following a trip to Berkshire, N. Y., to visit his father who is ill. He was accompanied by his uncle, Ernest Armstrong, of Brookings. Mrs. James Poirot and two sons of Corvallis visited briefly last week with her grandfather. Fred T. Iteece. She also spent a few days in Roseburg with relatives. Patient Visited James Andrews ,pent a day in Portland recently where he visited Ted Sowards. who is in the Vet erans Hospital to undergo surgery this week. Andrews also called on Mr. Lake, a patient who is re ceiving treatment following a car accident recently on the Melrose Rd. Mrs. Sowards was in Portland during the weekend to visit her husband following a few days in Eugene with her son. The Calvin McDowell family has moved to the Glide area. Secretary of Welfare Arthur S. Flemming told a House subcom mittee that colleges and universi ties face a "major crisis" in an anticipated increase of a million students by 1964. Racking a program for under writing a portion of the cost of borrowing for new college build ings, Klemming said: "I would plead with this Con gress to deal with this problem at this session. We cannot afford to wait until the next session."
