Peggy Lee Hopes For Return
Of Music Of Big Orchestras
By BOB THOMAS
AP Movie-TV Writer
HOLLYWOOD (AP) If rock
V roll is nn ils way oul, what
will take its place? Penny Lee
hopes it will be the music of big
bands.
The blonde songstress harks
back to that great band er$.
Starting as vocalist for Benny
Goodigan, she branched out on
her own in time for the era of
the pop singer. Then came rock
'n' roll, which nobody has been
able to define.

I told them nobody would listen
to it. Nobody did.
Thanks to the payola probe and
just plain exhaustion of the fad,
the honking saxes, thumping gui
tars and no-talent leen-uge sing
ers appear to be on the decline.
j Single record sales ( mostly r. 'n'
r. ) are reported down Lh per cent,
while albums (mostly non-r. 'nr.)
; continue to sell briskly,
j "I hope this means that music
is coining back," said Peggy.
"I'd like to see a return to jazz
and swing. I think it would be
a great thing for kids today to
get interested in band music.
"I believe television is what
killed the band busiifl'ss. Folks
started slaying home for their en
tertainment, instead of going out
to dance. There should ue a cam
paign to get kids to start going to
dances. I think they'd have a lot
of fun and they'd get into much
less trouble."
Peggy herself is going in all
directions these days. After the
record date, she was leaving for
New York and five TV specials,
meanwhile singing nightly at .1
night spot. An accomplished score
writer she has a future assign
ment lo write songs for George
Pai's "The Grimm Brothers."
And this month she will be seen
on G. K. Theater in her first
dramatic role since "Pete Kelly's
Blues." She got an academy nont
