Summit Policy
Views Diverge
WASHINGTON (AP) Differ
enecs between the United Stales
and Great Britain over summit
policy are bubbling to the surface
once again.
Although diplomats don't like to
talk about it, President Eisenhow
er and British Prime Minister
Harold Jlacmillan still don't see
eve to eve on the questions of
timing and negotiations.
A week-Ions exchange of lop
secret, top-level messages has
made this evident.
Apparently Macinillan is trying
to rusli fciscniiower ana rresmcm
Charles de Gaulle of Fiance into
a conference with Soviet Premier
Nikita Khrushchev at the earliest
possible moment.
The British leader's insistence
has surprised American officials.
They had thought his earlier ur
gency about a summit conference
was only campaign oratory. Willi
the recent election victory in his
pocket, they reasoned, he would
not pressure so much. But this
has not been the case.
Officials here are concerned
about more than the timing. They
think they have detected a willing
ness on Macmillan's part to soften
the Western stand on the Berlin
issue.
Informants say that Jlacmillan
would like a summit conference
next month, at the latest in De
cember. President Eisenhower re
portedly has suggested a meeting
in early December but, if De
Gaulle requests a delay, would be
willing to put it off until next
year, probably in February.
These differences have made
diplomat! feel that there must be
a Western summit conference in
advance of the Kast-West meet
ing. There was no confirmation,
however, of a Bonn report that
Eisenhower had proposed such an
advance session for the end of
this month.

Minor Illnesses Harass
Men More Than Women
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (API
Men die sooner than women, per
haps because men carry on
through minor illnesses right to
the crave.
The women suffer or report
more episodes of disabling illness
during their lives, a team of physi
cians reported today.
But women can more easily take
to bed with a cold, stomach upset,
headaches or other 'ills. Women
are more expected to do so in our
culture, said Drs. Lawrence E. ILn
kle Jr., Ituth Kedmonth, Norman
Flummcr and Harold G. Wolff, of
the New York Hospital-Cornell
Medical Center.
Bad Effect
"One is led to wonder whether
the tendency of the American
male to 'carry on no matter what'
may not, indeed, have something
to do with the greater longevity
among women, but there is no easy
answer to this speculation," they
said.
They analyzed 25-year health and
work records of 116 men and 9li
women of comparable ages, back
ground and economic status em
ployed by the New York Telephone
Co.
The women reported much more
bona fide illness, the researchers
told the American Public Health
Assn. annual meeting here.
Their excess illness consisted
mainly of colds, grippe, sore
throat, stomach upsets, muscular
pains, cuts and bruises, headaches,
and minor upsets of mood, thought
and behavior.

Acting Veteran
Ends Long Run
HOLLYWOOD (AP) If Neely
Edwards seems bereft today,
there's good reason. He has just
finished what must be by far the
longest run of any actor in Ameri
can show business.
"The Drunkard" finished its his
toric run at the Theater Mart last
weekend. The Victorian melo
drama, first produced by P. T.
Barnum, began its run in 1033,
when the nation was engaged in
New Deal alphabotics.
Through earthquake, flood, re
cession, war and prosperity, the
show continued its liyht-hearted
preachment against demon rum.
Rising costs and dwindling busi
ness finally caught up with "The
Drunkard." putting Neely Ed
wards out of a job for the first
time in 26 years. But he isn't wor
ried.
"1 never had to look for a job
in my life." said Neely, now a
spry 76. "Even when it looked likej
a castrophe for me, something al-
ways came up. 1 It let Goa take
His course."
The entertainer fell into the job
by chance. He had started his pro
fessional career in New York in
1904, worked his way up through
burlesque to bigtime vaudeville as
partner with Ed Flanagan, sire of
Dennis O'Kecfe, and also Bunny
Granville, Bonila's father.
"I had made comedies at Uni
versal for six years," Neely re
called, "and then I went East to
appear with Ed in the last 10 or
12 weeks of bigtime vaudeville. I
came back to free-lance in pic
tures when they offered me the
job in 'The Drunkard.' "
He started on New Year's eve
in 1934, a few months after the
show opened. There he remained,
playing the comic bartender and
singing and hoofing in the after-show.
