In TV Probe
WASHINGTON (AP) - The
House Investigating Committee
has recessed until Nov. 2 its
probe of TV quiz shows after sub
poenaing bin-money winner
Charles Van Doren of New York.
Chairman Orcn Harris (D-Ar!;)
announced at the conclusion of six
days of hearings that a subpoena
was issued last Friday for Van
Doren to appear Monday.
"Mr. Van Doren has purposely
avoided service," Harris said, but
"we expect him here" on Nov. 2.
Van Doren, who won $129,000 on
the television show "Twenty-One."

Metal Trade Unions
Voting On Contract
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Mem
bers of metal trade unions have
begun voting on ratification of a
proposed three-year contract to
end the 47-day-oId Pacific Coast
shipyard strike.
Tom Rotell, executive secre
tary of the Pacific Coast Metal
Trades Council, said Monday the
union negotiating committee
unanimously reported acceptance.
In Seattle, union officials said
the offer includes an 8-cent-an-hour
wage increase retroactive to
July 1 plus an additional 2 cents
beginning when the men return
to work. On April 1, 1660, a 3
cent benefit would be applied by
the shipbuilders to severance pay
or pensions. Earnings would bi
increased 8 cents July 1, 1960 and
9 cents the following year.
The vote count is to be com
pleted Saturday.
Three other unions involved in
the shipyard shutdown, which has
tied up yards from California
north to the Canadian border,
have not accepted offers from
the shipbuilders. They are the
Machinists, the Ship Carpenters
and a United Steel Workers af
filiate in San Francisco. Repre
sentatives of these unions still are
meeting with a federal negotiator.

To O.E.S. Chapter

A baton and stand, a gift from
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Harris of Seotts
burg, were presented to Oregon
chapter No. 57, OES at its regular
meeting Wednesday evening in tne
Masonic temple, Canyonvilic, with
Mrs. William Moore, worthy ma
tron and William Moore, worthy
patron, presiding.
The presentation was made by
Mrs. W. Frank Brown. Vollowing
the regular business meeting, re
freshments were served by Miss
Bess Clough and Mrs. Craig Heath.
The South Douglas Business and
Professional women's club met

Portland To Build
Drydock By 1964
PORTLAND (AP) The Port
of Portland decided Monday on
construction within five years of
a 24,000-ton capacity drydock.
It said studies show s,uch a
facility will be needed by 1964 to
supplement the two drydocks al
ready in operation at Swan Island
here.
For financing, the port commis
sion authorized issuance ot SI, 501),
000 in general obligation bonds.
This will go with two million dol
lars worth issued previously for
the drydock project.
The commission said a study by
its staff and Frederic R. Harris,
Inc.. New York drydock design
and operation specialists, show the
larger dock will be needed to
handle bigger merchant ships now
being built. It said the present two
drydocks are not large enough for
them. -
To complete' the drydock' the
commission said it probably win
issue an additional $3,800,000 in
bonds within the next 4 years.

SEATTLE (AP) Transporta
tion leaders were told here,
their most urgent job is to stem
what one speaker called the
"scandously horrible" growth of
traffic accidents.
"... Do something, do any
thing," James K. Knudson of
Washington, D. C. advised mem
bers of the National Defense
Transportation Assn.
Knudson, former defense trans
port administrator, noted that 2S,
700 Americans were killed and 2,
825,000 injured on the highways
last year and that motor vehicle
deaths were 5 per cent higher in
the first six months of this year.
He called it "a sad and continu
ing reminder of our human frailty
and national ineptitude."
Sen. E. L. Bartlctt (D-Alaska)
told the NDTA his new state needs
lower transportation charges, im
proved service and more flexibil
ity in routos and systems,
"The speed of Alaska's develop
ment," he said, "will be measured
precisely by growth and improve
ment in our transportation sys
tem." George R. Pearkes, Canada's
minister of national defense, said
his government has "ready facili
ties" from which it could operate
outside of Ottawa in case of war
"even if there is serious radioac
tive fallout."
He gave no details, but said
"the purpose we have had in mind
has been to decentralize as tar as
possible."

Proposals Due
On Columbia
THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) The
chief of the Army Corps of En
