Lebanon Chief Quits
LEBANON (AP) The Lebanon
City Council this week accepted
the resignation of Chief of Police
Ned Crippen and appointed Karel
lJyer, assistant chief, to the post.
Crippen resigned effective June
1. He told tho council he plans
to devote his time to operation of
a service station and sporting
goods store he owns hero.
Crippen has been chief of the
13-man department the past five
years.

Forest Lab Fund
Urged ForOSC
WASHINGTON A(P) An ap
propriation of up to one million
dollars was urged Tuesday by
Sen. Jtichard L. Weuhergur (D
Ore) to build a forest biology
laboratory at Corvallis, Ore.
The laboratory, Ncuberger told
a Senate Appropriations subcom
mittee, would provide research to
overcome insects and disease
which annually destroy the equiv
alent of 24 billion board feet of
timber.
The senator said Corvallis, be
cause of its nearness to Oregon
State College, would be an ideal
site.

$000,000 for Bureau of Land .Man
agement timber sale administra
tion to permit the sale of the full
allowable cut on O&C lands.

Mrs. Arthur Selby, News-Review
correspondent for Glide, entered
Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene
Wednesday for further surgery on
her arm today. Mrs. Paul Amann
took her to Eugene.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lynch are
newcomers from Baker, Ore., and
have purchased the Kirby Masters
home on Star Route, Box 5(',0. Mr.
Lynch has retired. He has been a
cattleman ail of his life and recent
ly sold two ranches at Haines,
Ore. He plans to hunt and fish dur
ing his retirement years. Air. and
Mrs. Lynch have a daughter re
siding at Winston.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur A. Goodger
have moved here from .St. Regis,
Mont., and have purchased the
home at 13117 NE Stephens St.,
which they are remodeling. The
Goodgers have two ranches in
.Montana, which they have rented.
They have an electric rug loom
and as a hobby make cotton rugs.
They plan to also reii.odel a build
ing on their property here and
make it into apartments for rentals.

Marvin Moore, U.S. Air Force, '
arrived here Tuesday night in com- ;
pany with Mrs. Moore to spend
a leave visiting his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Claude Moore. He has I
been stationed in Ogden, Utah, and
from here will go to the Hawaiian
Islands. Mrs. Moore will remain
in Roseburg at the Claude Moore
home during her husband's ab
sence.

Arch masons from all over the
state and was held at the Masonic

ter, Mrs. Leon Berry of Tillamook,

left today for Salem to visit for
a couple of days before returning
home. They spent the weekend
with Mr. and Airs. Lcn Whitaker
who drove them to Days Creek,
Canyonville and Riddle to greet
old friends. Mr. and Mrs. Don
Snyder of Medford came to Rose
burg to visit Mrs. O'Neel and Mrs.
Berry and were guests of the Bart
leys for the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Turner, for
merly of Roseburg and Winston,
and in recent months residents of
Iloonah, Alaska, arrived here by
plane Monday to visit. They are
presently the guests of Mr. and
Mrs. William Kernan. They plan
to get their trailer house ready
for occupancy, then will spend the
remainder of the summer in Port
land. Turner has been superintend
ent of schools at Hoonah and is
now having his summer vacation.
His present plans call for his re-;
turn to Alaska in the fall.
Bette Hurton, a student at the
Stale College of Washington, was
named one of the 50 outstanding
seniors of the college. These sen
iors are chosen on the basis of
scholarship, leadership, activities
and character. Among Belte's ac
tivities were president of her liv
ing group, a member of Spurs and
a YMCA freshman advisor. Bette
will be graduated with honors this
June. She is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Thomas Hutton, Rt. 3

Larry Applet, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Jerry Applebee of Looking
glass, will be completing his soph
omore year at the Gallaudet Col
lege for the Deaf in New York
and has accepted summer employ
ment in New Jersey. He will work
for General Air Products Co. at
Cedar Grove and will reside in
nearby Verona. Larry will do as
sembly work for the company
which manufactures registers and
grills for air conditioning units.
At the college, which is the only
one of its kind in the world. Larry
is maioring in commercial art,
with education as his minor.
Mr. and Mrs. Hart of Albany
have been guests during the IOOF
convention of Mrs. Frances Brown.
Mrs. Burton T. Randall of this
city enjoyed the weekend in Eu
gene visiting her daughter, Mrs.
Bruce Brenn.
Chaplain and Mrs. N. Charles
Wallin and Mrs. Joseph Toman of
this city went to Portland Monday
on business.
Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Brighrman
of Portland were recent business
visitors in Roseburg.
Mrs. Miles Jorws has returned
to her home following a trip to
Blue River over the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Wilson of Los
Angeles have arrived to visit the
latter's father, F. Floch, and her
brother-in-law and sister, Mr, and
.Mrs. Robert H. Franks.
