ROSEBURG - 648 S. E.
LIFE IN SCOTTSBURG gets a rollicking treatment in
"Only When I Lough." Above is on illustration from
Mrs. Workmon as one of the state's top authors.
DOUGLAS LIBRARY ARRIVALS
Lower Umpqua Life Portrayed
In New Gladys Workman Book
By GEORGE CASTILLO
New.-Review As.istant Editor
Gladys Workman of Scotlsburg
has the happy capacity of being
able to laugh at her tribulations.
And for Gladys, that means
laughing almost all the time, tier
life has been literally one illness
or injury alter another. Her ill
nesses and accidents read like a
medical dictionary.
But the optimistic view she took
of life and its misfortunes has re
sulted in one of the finest literary
efforts from a Douglas County au
thor. She appropriately calls it
"'Only When I J.augh." Prentice
Hall is starting publication of the
book today.
Her story of her life in the his
toric little town of Scotlsburg is
told with earthy good humor in the
style of "The Egg and I."
It tells of the rollicking adven
tures of a family from the big city
of Los Angeles suddenly settling in
the little town of Scotlsburg in the
Lower Umpqua River valley.
Fresh Air Needed
Gladys made up ber mind that
the fresh air and peace of the
sparsely populated area around
Scottsburg would be just the ticket
to restore her husband Norman's
health. Ignoring such problems as
where to live and how to earn a
living, she packed up husband and
nephew and left for Scotlsburg
from Los Angeles.
The Workmans launched their
new life in a construction shack,

minus doors, windows, electricity,
water and "facilities." She had to
cope with floods, forest fires,
snakes in the kitchen, bears on the
porch, her recurrent illnesses and
a host of other problems not found
in the city.
Her biggest problem, however,
was getting to be accepted by her
plain speaking neighbors. They
'iiuight she was dangerously mad.
The local people believed their
suspicions of "that snooty Mrs.
Workman" were confirmed when
her husband revealed he had spent
their life savings on six tons of
daffodil bulbs. The tide changed,
however, as Norman helped im
prove the valley's daffodil industry.
This year, the Workmans' crop
yielded more than a million bulbs.
Encouraged, Gladys continued
her winning ways until she has
become Scottsburg's No. 1 citizen.
Characters Are Real
In her books, she has pictured
her neighbors and their activities
in a warmly hilarious fashion.
neither saintly nor sardonic. The
i characters are just plain folks.
What makes the book even more
readable is that the characters are
all real.
Being real, they have humor.
One indication is Gladys' introduc
tion of ceramics to the community.
She called one woman and said
"Maggie, how'd you like to take
ceramics?"
"Gee. kid," Maggie said. "I don't
see why I wouldn't. I've taken
Senitan and I.ydia Pinkhain's and
about everything else. What's ce
ramics good for?"
Mrs. Workman also does a mas-
terfnl job of describing such insti -
lutions as the party line telephone
She calls it "unquestionably the
finest tooUever perfected for hu
man communication." Her descrip
tion of the community forum which
took place with every ring of the
party line is hilarious.
Her warmly human story is one
that indicates that neither she nor
the valley will be the same again.
