Judgments Hit Shipping Firm
PORTLAND (AP) Two insur
ance companies won judgments
totaling $1,230,000 in a decision,
filed Tuesday in federal court
here, which grew out of an ocean
tragedy.
The S.S. Pennsylvania sank off
the Pacific Northwest coast in
January, 1952, taking the lives of

vessel was lost.
The decision was by U.S. Dist.
Judge Dave ling of Phoenix.
Ariz. Earlier he had held that
the steamship company was lia
ble for the losses because the
ship was not seaworthy. The loss
es were paid off by the two com
panies who insured the cargo.
Then they sued to recover the
money.
Judge Ling awarded $379,185
plus 6 per cent in interest from
the day of the sinking to the At-

! $479,083 plus interest paid to the

The estates of the men who died
with the ship were settled out of
court.
States Steamship now has lost
nearly three million dollars as
result of the sinking.
Judge Ling was assigned to the
federal district court here to try
the case.

the lOOF Grand Lodge and Re
bekah Assembly of Oregon at a
five-day session opening Sunday.
An estimated 1,500 members of
the two organiiations are expected
to convene here for their annual
program. For the Grand Lodge it
will be the 103rd session.

Hotel Room Tax
PORTLAND (AP) The Port
land City Council will take up
May 27 a proposal to tax hotel
rooms during this Centennial sum
mer.
Such a tax was suggested Tues
day by Mayor Terry Schrunk and
