One point that impressed
Marv was that there s too much
hlandneea in our lives and not
enough strong conviction. We
can't just talk our children into
being good and knowing right
from wrong, one speaker said.
We've got to have deep feelings
about these things ourselves. We
must let our children and
know what our convictions are
and what action we take because
of them. This is the way guid
ance is brought into our homes!
This blandness could possibly
hecoma tha ruin of a nation,
another panel member pointed
out. for when a nation or an
individual, for that matter
reaps to have deep convictions
and ceases to strive towards a
goal, that nation has already
commenced its downfall.

In 1919 Herter went to Germany

Later he became an assistant to

The youthful Herter got into

The story was much the same

PORTLAND (AP) Multno
mah County Commissioner Jack
Bain said Monday the county
would like time to study the rec
reation potential of 37 acres of
land on Hayden Island.
He wired Gov. Mark ' Hatfield,
asking him to have the state Land
Board postpone its proposed sale
of the island tract at a public
auction May 11.
The island is in the Columbia
Slough.
The Land Board said that Mult

City of Portland, had passed up
a chance to buy the land earlier.
Bain, in asking for the delay,
said the County Planning Com
mission would need time to make
a study of the property to see if
it would be desirable for county
