It is cochineal, a crimson or car mine dye made from the bodies of females of an insect called coc cus cacti. Aztec Indians made it in Mexi co long before the Spaniards ar rived in 1519. For a long tim Mexico was the world's major sup plier ot the dye millions of dol lars worth of it. Then the aniline dyes knocked cochineal out of the textile indus try. But lately requests have come from several countries, mainly Great Britain. It is wanted for foodstuffs as a colorant, and for a new textile which, for technical reasons, can not use anilines. Dr. Rubin de la Borbolia, of the Museo de Artcs Populares, has lo cated Indians who inherited the technique of production. A new sta tion has been set up in Oaxaca. Now Miss Britton would like it thoroughly understood that she has overcome her allergy. Next Friday March 27, 8 p.m., F.ST she will be seen in "A Girl Named Daisy," one in the new "F.llery Queen" series on NBC-TV. From the neck up Miss Britton has an I. Q. of 157 and small, classical features rather like those ascribed to Helen of Troy. From the neck down she has attributes, too. As Miss Britton explained it, her alleged allergy to clothes has been transformed into a slight allergy to the art of taking 'em off. She demonstrates her art occasionally in nightclubs these days only to pay the rent and the grocery bill while her mind lingers on loftier ambitions in television and the the ater. "My problem is one ef identifi- cation," she said. "I've appeared in ju plays and television uramas. It's years since I worked in a bur lesque theater. The last time my name was associated with bur lesque was at Carnegi Hall where I narrated' 'Best of Burlesque' and received wonderful notices without taking off even a glove. Miss Britton said that she didn't read for her role as a carnival cooch dancer in the Friday "El lery Queen" program.- A cooch dancer, she explained, sitting per fectly still, is a girl who wiggles her hips. She finds it ironical that every time she has tried out for the role of a strip-teaser on television she has been turned down. Why this should be she cannot imagine. Mulling it over, we imagine it's because her features are cameo, her expression as fresh and inno cent as that of a well-bred ir.genue from suburbia. On occasion Miss Britton has tried to obtain television roles un der an assumed name, she said. Each time she has been assured of the job and each time her true identity has been discovered. After Mike Wallace television Interveiw some time ago she said that she received "numerous won derful letters from viewers asking me why I keep on sho'wing my body for a living when I could be doing something else. "The answer is that when I go broke I have to go back to strip ping. Six times I've quit and six times I've gone broke and then I have to go back to it to earn a living." She hopes that her role on "El lery Queen" might mean "I'm breaking through a bit. 1 didn't seek the job. It sought me. Since it happened of itself it could mean a breakthrough." yiaa CREAM AND SUGAR Se- norita Denise Guimaraes Praflo, 20, ot Bra7.il, is the 1959-60 Pan-American Coffee Queen.
