Pioneer Speck
In Vast Space
WASHINGTON (AP) Tiny Pio
neer IV, soaring toward a ren

to America but only a speck in
the vastness of space.
Moreover, the distances
gold-plated 13-pound space probe
has already traveled iremen-i

but baby steps on the highways
of the universe.
Pioneer IV is due to become an
orbiting object in the soikr sys
tem, measuring some seven billion
miles in diameter, but still like a
small bubble in the ocean of
space.
The sun, around which the
earth and the eight other major
planets wheel, is only a minor
leaguer in the Heavens. It is only
one of some 200 billion s.ars in
the Milkv Wav galaxy.
The Milkv Wav itself, though
having a diameter of 600 quadril
lions miles, is only one ot millions
of other similarly vast systems in
the universe.
The tremendous distances of
space are measured in terms of
light-years. A light-year is the dis
tance that light, moving at 186,000
miles a second, would travel in a
. year's time. In mileage, it's
six trillion miles.
By such standards our sun. with
its tilanets and such earthly inter
lopers a the Soviet Mechta and
t.'ie American Pioneer IV, is just
a lonely soul tucked away in the
suburb of the Milky Way. II is 30
quadrillion miles from the sun to
the center of the Milky Way.
