While shirtsleeve temperatures
warmed Roseburg last Saturday
and Sunday, over 260 persons were
enjoying one of America's fastest
growing sports, skiing, only 42
milts away.
The place: Taft Mountain Ski
area.
Sheltered on a north slope of the
mountain, snow ranging up to three
or more feet in depth provided ade
quate cover and a good fast course
for skiers gliding down the 600 foot
course along side the operating ski
low.
Taft Mountain, because of its
location in a "snow belt" area,
still' has snow although approaches
to me area are mostly open. With
snow cover well below normal in
the Cascades this winter, the Taft
Mountain pack still measured five
feet and should assure good ski
ing for several weeks yet this
spring. In normal years, 10 to 12
feet of snow are not uncommon on
the mountain and allow skiing into
April or even later.
For several years after the Taft
Mountain area was opened to ski
ing about 1952, its facilities were
primitive and the area was diffi
cult to reach from a road stand
point. Hard work by devoted ski
ers, principally the Edelweis Ski

LATE AFTERNOON SKIERS glide down the snowy face of Tott Mountain os under deep

mountain. At the left of the forest shown, an open steep slope climbs to the crest and
affords a respectable challenge to skiers.

knocked out at the Miami Reach
Auditorium Wednesday night by a
41 underdog, Charley Powell of
San Diego, Calif.
Gleason had claimed Valdes was
the real champion. He belittled
Floyd Patterson's title.
The end of the bloody, bruising,
mauling affair came at 2:0.1 of the
eighth round when referee Cv Gott

exhaused Valdes, seemingly flab

Valdes had, gone down twice be

a left and a right to the jaw and
a right to the bark, and once
when the ex-pro football player
draped him over the middle
strand of the ring ropes.
Gottfried said those were (he

third time on a stumble. The
referee ruled he was too exhaust

It was confident Valdes who
answered the first bell, and he
went through the first round al
most casually. In the second round,
however, Powell staggered him
with a left hook, splitting his lip.
From that point on the weighty
Cuban was fighting for survival.
He suffered a gash over his right
eye in the third and thereafter pre

to ward off the aggressive C'ali

room to unlimher his heavy guns.
In the seventh one of Towell's
robust left hooks sent Valdes tum

Powell was ahead on the cards of
all three officials when the end
came. The nationally televised bout

Machen's rating at a conlendcr

Machcn will enter the ring

Johnson is Machen's first op

After that fight, Machen came to
