Demo Chieftain Johnson
Accused Of Ignoring Pleas
For More Party Huddles
WASHINGTON (AP)-Sen. WU-j
liam Proxmire (D-Wi) iiid to
day that other Democratic ena
tora have appealed in vain to
Majority Leader Lyndon B. John
son of Tex a i for more frequent
party conferences.
Proxmire aurprised hit col
leaguea earlier last week by
peaking out against the power
concentrated in Johmon'a hands
and calling for more democracy
in shaping the Democrats' pro
gram in the Senate.
"The typical Democratic sena
tor has literally nothing to do with
determining the legislative pro
gram and policies of his party in
the Senate, he said.
In a letter today to the editor
of the Washington Post, replying
to an editorial about his speech,
Proxmire said he was not the only
Democratic senator disturbed that
party conferences are called only
once a year.
The newspaper's editorial 1 said
Proxmire perhaps had a point in
wanting more meetings of the
Democratic conference, but it add-

ed, "let him and like-minded Sen
ators request them.
Results So Far Zero
To this, Proxmire replied that
to his certain knowledge other i
senators have done exactly this,
but he said that the results have
been lero.
He reiterated his contention
that the leadership has a respon
sibility to call Democratic confer
ences and to prepare an agenda
that would give the party mem
bers voice in the legislation to
be brought up for action.
Proxmire also complained about
the editorial's criticism that he
had been "perfectly content to
heap praise upon Mr. Johnson
when it served his purpose."
"This is truly strange argu
ment," he said, adding that "it
would seem to follow that only
those who constantly criticiied
and have never been able to say
anything good about the leader
ship should criticize it."
Proxmire said that In bis
speech, as on previous occasions,
he had described Johnson as an
extremely able leader.

NEW YORK (AP) One of the
fastest growing entertainment me
dia in the country today is FM
radio.
A basic reason is that a rapid
ly increasing number of adults
who enjoy listening to "good,"
though not necessarily "classical"
music are failing to find it on
their regular local AM radio sta
tions. There are now 579 FM stations
on the air. Last year the Federal
Communications Commission is
sued 127 new construction permits
and only 22 stations went off the
air. Today there are 70 FM appli
cations pending. A year ago there
were 39. Five years ago there were
only four.
After a period In the duldrums
resulting from the impact of tele
vision, the revival of FM reflects
a growing public demand for high
fidelity music reproduction.
One who grows accustomed to
hi-fi musie often is not satisfied
with the musical tones heard on
AM radio, which generally cuts
off at from 5,000 to 8.000 cycles.
Most TV audio reception is equal
ly constricted.
Signal Static-Free
But an FM station operates In
a wider frequency band than AM.
Normally utilizing a range up to
15.000 cycles, its signal is almost
free of static and can be heard
in fuller dynamic range. Subdued
musical passages don't have to
battle background noise and there
is less distortion in loud passages.
Experts in industry and govern
ment say that the present come
back of FM also reflects the ter
rific crowding of the AM band.
The fact that TV no longer is nov
elty, and the opportunity of an FM
station to make real money for
tiie first time.
The profit lies in "subsidiary
authorizations" which the FCC
started granting three years ago.
Under these authorizations sta
tions can sell "background music"
services to stores, factories and
the like without advertising con
tent. Because of the very wide FM
channel, a station can simulane
ously handle two different pro
grams one for the general pub
lic and the other for special serv
ice subscribers.
FCC Okays Channels
FM is a development by the late
Dr. Edwin H. Armstrong of Al-
fiine, N.J., who had difficulties in
aunching his brainchild of the
1930s. The FCC authorized 35 com
mercial channels and five educa
tional effective Jan. 1, 1941.
The National Assn. of Broad
casters estimates that there are 15
million FM seta , in use in this
country today. Of this total, 12
million are estimated to be in
American homes. This means that
24 per cent of all homes contain
at least one FM receiver.

Jayne Mansfield & Hubby
Finally Furnish Mansion
By BOB THOMAS
AP Movie-TV Writer
HOLLYWOOD (AP) You will
be happy to know that Jayne
Mansfield's house is no longer as
bare as she was in Brazil.
Remember all that jazz, about
Jayne and Mickey Hargitay sleep
ing on the floor in their barren
Beverly Hills mansion? No more.
They've got their own bed now.
"Texas-size that's bigger than
king-size," explains Dallas-reared
Jayne.
"There will be a heart-shaped
' red canopy over the bed," she
said, pointing. "On the wall above
the bedstead will be cupids and
arrows in marble. And all around
the bottom of the bed will be pink
fluorescent lighting. "
Jayne was giving me a personal
lour of the remarkable house.
She was wearing a remarkably
filled blue sweater and black
tights decorated with a pink pussy
rat and pink tassels. Pink is a
dominant theme here.
House Built By V.lltt
The house, huil by Rudy Vallee
in his "Vagabond Lover" days, is
now pink with a special glitter
added to the paint "It shines just
heavenly at night." Around the
Sunset Blvd. property is a new
pink stone wall.
"Come see my bathroom it's
divine," she urged. 1 did, and it
is. The heart-shaped tub has a
gold-mosaic bottom. The shower is
studded with jeweled tile.
"Mickey tore out the tile in all
11 bathrooms," she reported.
"They were just too dreary. We'll
put pink fur on the floor,"
Jayne wandered on to tne nod
rooms of her daughter, Jayne Ma
rie, 8, which was filled with dolls
collected from Jayne's travels,
and of her son, Miklos Jr., 2
months, who slumbered in his
heart-s h a p e d bed. The baby's
room was painted with a fairy
tale mural which depicted Jayne
as a witch. She pointed out that
the rabbits in the design even
had heart s h a p e d noses and
navels.
Sole adornment of the ballroom
size living room so far is a foun
tain of white marble "from Hun
gary, just like Mickey." She said
it would some day squirt champagne.
