10 Th News-Rtview, Roseburg, Ort. Thurs., Feb. 19, 1959 1 SpCCIOl Fish F6G American Income Hit Peak In January, Economists Say By SAM DAWSON AP Businats N.ws Analyst NKW YOKK (AP) Ho you have more money to ipend today than you had year a Co? Possibly you yourself don't. But the slide rule boya down in Wash ington say American at a whole have. Some 1J' billion dollars more. Once month they add tip all the data they can get on personal income from varioua sources. Their figures are closely watched by merchant and manufacturers alike, since the statistics give them some idea of how much money is available to be tapped for sale of the foods they Hock or make. The Commerce Department aayt that in January personal income, on a seasonally adjusted' annual rate, hit a record of nearly 3t2Vi billion dollars. What goes into thil figure? Waees and salaries are the big. eest item. This January they came to 244 Vi billion dollars, up ' billion from the previous year. The department's statisticians also gather data as best iney can Holiday Meats In Good Supply By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Chances are you'll bo eating smoked ham or turkey Sunday if the food shopper in your house goes for the current Dargaina. Supplies of both meats are plentiful. Ham isn't the only pork product featured. Some stores are putting on special prices for bacon, and pork chops are down 9 cents and more a pound in some areas. Beef prices are mixed while fryers and leg oi lamo are up a few pennies in scattered locations. Potatoes remain the outstanding vegetable bargain in most stores. Other best beta include fall cab bage, root crops, sweet potatoes, endive and escarole. The first North Carolina cooking greens are in the markets at bargain levels. Lettuce, carrots, pascal celery, new cabbage, onions and spinach also are good buys. Eggplant, snap beam and peppers are more expensive. Once again apples and Florida citrus rank aa the top bargains on fruit counters. Apple prices firmed this week, however, as storage rooms started to grow empty, and supplies of tangerines also are growing light Bananas, limes, California navel orangea, Puerto Rican coconuts, lemons and avo cados also are good Buys, on what the professional man and the small business man makes for himself. It adds what landlords take in as rent, what stockholders get as dividends, and what indi viduals get as interest on bonds, saving accounts and the like. Estimates of farm income are included and also benefit paid to the unemployed, to veterans, to Social Security pensioners. From the total the department then deducts what workers con tribute toward Social Security. What can Americans do with all this 362 billion dollars? First they can pay taxes. With what's left they can pay higher prices for some goods and for many services. Then they can pay all the bills connected with the stead ily rising standards of living of American as a whole. In 1939 a man with a wife and two children, and with an income of $5,000, paid $19 in taxes and had $4,941 left to spend on what be needed or wanted. Today to buy the same items and services, the man must make $11,140. Cuts Game Revenue SALEM (AP) The House Fish snd Game Committee was told Wednesday that the special $1 angling fee for one day has de creased the state Game Commis sion's revenue from fishing li censes. R. C. Hollo way of the Game Commission said there was a drop of $26,000 last year in reve nue from angUng licenses. He at tributed it to the $1 fee put into effect for the first time last year for all fishing. The $1 license bad involved only salmon until then. Holloway told the committee that Oregon is the only Western state and probably the only state in the country with the special $1 daily license. Rep. Tom McClellan (D-Neotsu) said he favored an extension in the law because of its value to the tourist industry. The provision for the $1 daily fee expired at the end of 1958. The committee took do action. LUCKY FELINE DENVER (AP) Boots, a Sia mese cat, celebrated today his 18th birthday.
